Edit: this place is now called Groom So I recently moved to Chicago and was looking for a place to get my hair cut based on proximity and reviews. I ended up getting my hair cut by Kate. I gave her some basic wants and then let her cook and she absolutely did an amazing job. The establishment is also very clean and welcoming. Highly recommend. I will be returning.

Alecia D. has been my barber for at least 3 years now. I've always been impressed with her ability to be consistent and translate my ideal haircut into reality each and every time. I am moving soon and quite sad about having to find a new place to go. Without Alecia, I'm not sure that would be the case.

As a creature of habit, I do not enjoy the process of finding a new stylist. So, I was really bummed out when my stylist of 10+ years stopped working when his salon closed. But, as soon as I met with Alecia at 18/8, I knew that I was in very good hands. From the beginning it's been a "collaborative" process, and it took no time at all for me to feel even more satisfied than I had been before. I especially enjoy her openness to trying out different ideas, and her desire to develop her skills even further and to learn about different products, on a continual basis.

I've been consistently getting my haircuts from Alecia for quite some time now, and I have to say that she's nothing short of amazing! She has an incredible eye for detail and always takes the time to listen to my needs and preferences before starting each appointment. Overcharged and rushed. Avoid. Following my first haircut, I realized that they had overcharged me (received a 'classic' haircut, but was charged for an 'executive'). The manager apologized and said she had put a note in my file so that I would receive a corresponding upgrade or discount on my next haircut. Arrived for my second haircut, and staff at front desk said they saw nothing in my file. I said I'd just follow up after, but they asked me to explain what happened and promised an owner/manager would call. The process took 5-10 min, so when we sat down for my haircut and I began to ask a question, the stylist politely cut me off to say we "better get going as we only have 20 minutes until the next appointment." The haircut was rushed, and then they were on to the next customer (from check-in to finish was 28 minutes). On the way home, I checked the website and my haircut didn't include the neck razor shave that is advertised as part of the classic haircut. As for the follow-up, it has been a few weeks and no one called. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I sent a follow-up message to them regarding this experience - but no response. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend.

Went to 18/8 and thanks to Alecia, went back again. I have all kinds of stuff wrong with my hair, but it was no match for Alecia. The salon itself is great, and the cut/experience was even better. Can’t recommend it enough.

I started coming to 18/8 after a barber at another company gave me a horrendous haircut, and I needed someone to help me fix the mess that was left. 18/8 was close to my office and an easy place to pop into, so I gave it a try. This is where I met Alecia. Alecia took unbelievable care of me. Her experience is bar none, and her attention to detail, along with careful listening to the client every single cut, has left me coming back for more. Since my first experience, I have came back every month, for the past six months. Safe to say I have become a loyal customer. Thank you Alecia!

I thought my cut might be uneven, but I trusted my stylist and assumed I was just seeing it wrong or she would fix it up on the final pass. When I got home I saw that one side was cut down to about half an inch and the other was about 2.5 inches. Looking back I should’ve spoken up, but it’s difficult to figure out how to say something like that without insulting their ability. Either way, I wouldn’t work with a stylist that doesn’t notice something like that.

I was visiting Chicago and needed a haircut and I stumbled upon 18/8. I made an appointment on line and was able to get in the same day. Kate Davis cut my hair and she was fantastic. Kate listened to what I wanted in a haircut and she delivered. I now need to find reasons to get back to Chicago to get my haircut.

I've been a client of Alecia's for several years and highly recommend 18/8. When I was shopping around for a barber many years ago, I was fortunate to meet Alecia and was very impressed. Not only is she an excellent stylist, but she is also extremely knowledgeable on products and techniques (like preventing hair loss). She's fun and warm so you don't even realize that almost an hour has gone by before you're out the door looking and feeling great. Alecia always goes above and beyond from little things like an eyebrow trim and beard line up to complete a look to accommodating last minute bookings to ensure you're always looking sharp. She's my go to in Chicago for any hair services. If you're looking for excellent service and a comfortable, high-end establishment in Chicago, you should visit Alecia at 18/8 River North. Sean didn't wash my hair before or after cutting it. The beard was cut crookedly. This is disgusting service for $80.

The hair was not washed before cutting and was not washed after cutting. Even a hairdryer couldn't get my hair out of my clothes. It was the first time I saw how the master’s hands were shaking! Speaking of the master, his name is Sean. It feels like he's holding scissors for the first time! And they ask for $80 for this?!!! My God! I'd rather cut my hair bald! This is the worst hair salon in the city center.

Best salon I’ve been to in a while. The people are incredibly nice, and have a lot of great amenities such as drinks warm towels etc. Now while it is a bit pricey it is definitely worth it!

Good stylists but no value for punctuality. Was told hairstylist was finishing up and then 15 minutes later was informed the stylist will need 10 more minutes. Running late occasionally is understandable, but not having the courtesy to inform me of a 25 minute delay beforehand is unacceptable given the rates they charge.

Laura was amazing, funny, and extremely detail oriented. I needed a face shave/alignment and a haircut on a work trip to Chicago, and found this spot after looking around. I decided to add on the facial services, too, and it was the best decision I could’ve made. Not only did Laura pay extreme attention to my sensitive skin, the way I liked my hair cut, and previous lines I had set, she also did a killer job with my fade. The facial was a perfect addition. 2 hours of much needed relaxation and a looooot of laughs. Thanks Laura!

Sol, one of the best barbers very detailed, and professional. I always come out of this Salon feeling like a million bucks! Highly recommend, the pricing is reasonable and they accommodate everyone! The receptionist is amazing as well very courteous.
