I flew all the way from SF to have my hair done by Emu. She is the only person I trust to color and cut my fine dark hair. Extremely knowledgeable, high attention to detail (+ the skill to execute, which you know is hit or miss in NY), and always gives the best tailored advice to care for my hair post processing. We did a double process balayage with root smudge and money pieces after 10 months of growth. I wanted to blend out the harsh line, even out the base bleach tone, and dreamt of a cool vibrant purple for most of the length. Needless to say, dreams do come true. The purple turned out super dimensional and virtually no additional damage despite the double process. Thank you, Emu!

Barry is always amazing! Have been seeing barry for my hair for at least a year or more now. I have curly hair (curly type maybe 2b/2c?), i get scared of where i go because ive had bad hair experiences in the past. I also now have a lot of whites but im not a huge fan of dyeing my hair. Barry took into account all of my concerns! He helps me tackle my whites (sparkles as he calls them!) but he also keeps in mind i want to use the least harsh products and thats what he does! I wanted to experiment with some color and he once again struck a great balance in helping me achieve a color that looked natural but also vibrant and gave me the subtle change i was looking for, while also keeping in mind that i dont want to use products that are too harsh or damaging! Hes also such a wonderful personality, a positive energy, and overall just wonderful in every way. I highly recommend Barry!

I made an appointment with Jamie on July 17 for a touch up and a haircut. I was new to the salon and had heard good things about it. I showed her pictures of the color and style of the haircut. She told me what she wanted to do and I told her I wanted to be a yellow blonde and I wanted layers in my hair. She was done quicker than I anticipated and in the salon I couldn’t see the color accurately. When I came home I saw it was much darker than I wanted. When I got up in the morning I noticed my pillow was covered in brown. It took me a few minutes to realize it was the hair dye. I never had that happen to me before after over forty years of coloring my hair. I messaged her and asked her opinion. She never responded even after the second day with it happening again. I washed my hair thoroughly and the color is not at all what I wanted. I am so surprised that she did not respond to my question about why the dye would come off on my pillow. I know she is leaving the salon but still she could take care of who she had worked on. The salon was also notified and did nothing so I will not be going back.

The first picture was cut by Kumi Hirano at this salon 2 days ago. I had long straight hair to my chest before the cut. The rest of the pictures were what I showed her. She looked it twice and then started cutting without asking any hair related questions. Judge them yourself if you ever want her ti be your hairdresser.

Emm is a wonderful hair stylist and I can't recommend her enough! I went to her for my first haircut post-pandemic, and my hair was down to my waist! But she was incredibly patient and listened to what I wanted and was so helpful trying to get the right look for me. She was very reassuring every step of the way and I was very happy with the result. I eventually got my hair cut to just below shoulder length, and it was so technically precise that my wife couldn't believe how good it was, she was jealous! And it also helps that she's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet! If you want an exceptional hair styling experience, go see Emm!

I can't say enough about how much I love Jamie and A Grand Union! Met Jamie in February and she gave me an AMAZING haircut which I received so many complements. I decided to go back to her today for a color and I LOVE it! She took so much time to do my hair and was explaining to me each step along the way. I don't usually do much with my hair because of my active lifestyle but Jamie listened and worked her magic. RUN, don't walk to A Grand Union!

I responded to an ad on Salon Apprentice. After numerous texts, we agreed on a Tuesday at 4. Explained I was going on vacation to celebrate my birthday & wanted to be sure my hair was done. Get a text late the Thursday prior telling me that she’s booked & cancelling my appointment. What? We confirmed my appointment on 2/14 - almost a month before. It seems her client “reached out” & the “software canceled” the other appointment so she is taking her instead. Completely unacceptable & unprofessional. Book here only if you are ok with being left in the lurch days before a big event.

I’ve gotten my hair dyed and cut with Jamie for about a year now. I’m particular about how I want my hair cut and dyed and she always considers everything down to facial harmony and hair dye shades and skin tone pairing. Anyone looking to get ANY type of style and color with Jamie will not be disappointed. Her knowledge is top notch.

Emu was great! I asked for a hush cut and since my hair is on the thicker end I was afraid that hairstyle might not look good on me. But I explained to her exactly what I wanted and my concerns, and it turned out even better than I imagined. It also looked and felt more healthy. She is super friendly and fun to talk to, pays attention to small details and very thorough in her communication skills. She even gave me tips on styling my particular hairstyle as well. I highly recommend asking for Emu 😊

I had the best experience at this beautiful salon. My stylist Emu had the difficult task in taming my very curly thick long hair to a silk, sleek straight dream. The salon is conveniently located nor far from Union Square. It’s beautifully minimalistic decorated. While Emu was shampooing my hair, I was laying down in the chair, not sitting. She was so gentle I fell asleep. She asked me questions on what I wanted done. While she was blow drying my hair and untangling my curls, she again was so gentle I fell asleep. I would absolutely recommend this salon to any of my naturally curly hair people!

I have been getting my hair cut and colored my Jamie for a couple of years now and she is absolutely wonderful! Apart from just being an exceptional human being all around (one of the kindest, warmest people I have ever met), she is an absolute rockstar at cutting and coloring. So this review is for the stylist Emm. I have been working with Emm since July 2023, when she was in San Francisco, for my color. She really worked with me and paid attention to my wants and concerns about my color and was very patient and super nice and kind. She took me from my hard to lighten Asian dark hair to a beautiful ashy, beige blonde balayage. We worked over a period of 3 months to make sure my hair was lightened properly without compromising the health of my hair and that the placements of the highlights looked pretty. She made sure that the balayage would grow out prettily between visits. I get so many compliments on my color and how healthy and shiny my hair looks that I would trust no one else to color my hair anymore. Honestly, I would fly to NYC to get my color touched up by Emm! If y'all are ever in need of a good stylist and colorist, drop by A Grand Union salon and ask for Emm!

Such an amazing experience at this salon! I didn’t even have to show a reference picture because Emu knew exactly what I was looking for. The best place for hair! I have been coming to Katie for a while and she always does a beyond amazing job. I have struggled my whole life to find someone who cuts my curly hair in a way I like it. Katie is extremely knowledgeable about curly hair and always gives me a cut i love. The rest of the staff is also very friendly. Highly recommend!

Went there for the first time today for my IBE move-up and a gloss and saw Cody. Everyone at the salon was extremely kind, it was very clean, and Cody did an amazing job (as did his assistant, Joyce)!! I am more than happy with my results, Cody nailed it! Can’t recommend enough :)

Where do I begin? I was recommended to A Grand Union by my nail artist, who also is a client of this salon. I trust her judgement, so I had a good feeling going into the appointment. The owner of the salon, Yuki, welcomed me in, hung up my jacket and tote bag, and asked me if I wanted a drink. I went to the restroom to wash up before my appointment and was greeted by my stylist when I came out. Let me tell you, my stylist, Jamie, did not disappoint. She is a breath of fresh air, accommodating, and welcoming. I don’t think I’ve ever met a more genuine person. She was honest about the current state of my hair, but also optimistic on what my hair journey will look like. She worked magic on my hair and the scalp massage was next level. Jamie is knowledgeable and broke down all the steps to me. I learned so much about hair during my appointment. I’ll be back soon to do my color, since I was still unsure about what I wanted done, so I stuck with doing only a haircut at my first appointment. I can’t wait to go back!
