She is particularly gifted at translating trend and inspiration to what will work well with your hair type, face shape, and personal style. She is also an incredibly kind genuine person who gives world class hugs!

Incredibly welcoming, professional, and talented! I dread getting my haircut and with just one visit all of my anxieties have been washed away! Jonathan did an incredible job on my hair, not only did he listen to what I wanted, but he executed it beautifully! I walked out feeling like a new and better version of myself! First timer with Liv (Olivia) today… and what an amazing experience! She’s great, listened to all my requests, was patient and kind, came out LOVING my choppy textured pixie cut - super pleased I found her after noticing a friend’s new “do” and getting the recommendation. Super happy with my cut/style, Liv is a true artist!!

I absolutely love Above Ground. Especially my stylish Shaun Slaughter. He has been doing my hair since 2019, and there is no one I trust more with a simple cut or a bold color or style change. He is extremely knowledgeable and always so much fun to chat with through our sessions. We have done everything from a classic blonde balayage to all over pink, and I always leave beyond happy with my results. His haircuts are perfect, and I even cut blunt bangs for the first time this year without an ounce of worry. 10/10 recommend.

I've been going to Shaun for my hairstyling for 10+ years. His professionalism and attention to detail are unmatched, and his experience with the craft always has me leaving the chair happy. He's kind, funny, and a blast to chat with during our appointments. Always listens to my requests and isn't afraid to think outside the box to keep me looking fresh. Couldn't imagine a better stylist to visit. Above Ground LoDo is also one of the best shops I've had the pleasure of visiting. Went to Shane and decided to get a haircut and color. We had amazing consultation about what is going fit me. He gave me beautiful blond color. I felt so welcome and appreciate it as a gay man. I will be back to Shane and I’ll be sending people to him. Thank you!

When my daughter comes home for a visit she almost always makes an appointment at Above Ground. She says it’s her favorite place to get her hair done because she always leaves feeling really good about herself and looking amazing. The stylists here are so wonderful!

Above Ground is such a welcoming, inclusive space with something for everyone. Overhearing the other stylists and patrons building each other up healed my heart. I especially love Liv's approach. Finding someone who could provide my daughter with the style she craves while adhering to my ethical standards is a tall order. But Liv really delivers! Cruelty free, vegan, sustainable and TALENTED. We'll never go anywhere else. ✨

I've visited Above ground at both the LoDo and Colfax locations. Both stylists I've been to took the time to understand my needs and I always love my haircut. I always leave feeling my best. My stylist was Ro. She was amazing! I got a significant style change and she was able to understand what I was looking for exactly even though I could not describe it perfectly. I would recommend Above Ground to anyone, but if you are a queer person with a specific vision for your style this is the place for you!

Terrible customer service and so unprofessional. Never ever book Tim or Erin. After confirming our appointment a few days prior, Erin never showed up. I waited for her at the studio for 30 mins and when I texted to ask where she was she was super rude - no apology or explanation whatsoever. Tim cut my hair instead and made me feel so judged and unsafe in his chair. He didn’t ask enough questions about what I wanted before he chopped all my hair off and then blamed me for being dissatisfied with it. I really wanted to support a local queer business but unfortunately I will not be going back.

I have regularly been going to see Shaun at Above Ground Hair for years after a friend recommended him. She said she would NEVER let anyone else touch her hair again and I now understand why. Shaun has been cutting hair for well over a decade and he is clearly an expert. He is friendly willing to talk OR NOT (you can request a quiet cut on the booking page). Honestly, he treats hair as an art and he nails the look every time. 10/10 Would highly recommend again.

*Update* Again the below experience was with one stylist and in no way represents the rest of this amazing business. I chose to rebook my haircut/color with Above ground because it truly is a one of a kind place. I got my haircut with Erin at the Colfax location and love it. I am raising my review out of respect for the other stylists who work here and provide great service. I have a hard time writing this review because I have used Above Ground several times and have not had a bad experience. This review really goes to the professionalism of the last stylist I booked with Ryan Brody. I scheduled through Above Ground’s website with Ryan over two weeks in advance for a cut/color. I then got a text to confirm my appointment for Monday which I confirmed immediately after getting the text. When I showed up Monday at 9am for my 9-11am appointment no one was present. I then texted Ryan with no response so I waited a bit longer in case she was running late. I then called the number after sitting outside for 15+ minutes and left a voicemail confirming we had an appointment. Immediately after I hung up I got an email saying that my appointment had been canceled. I never got any communication from Ryan as to why this happened. I understand life happens but to not have at least some decency to reach out and say sorry not going to make it seems harsh. I live 35 minutes away and drove all the way into downtown and paid for parking just to have my appointment canceled 20 minutes after it was supposed to start.

Great haircut. Loved the people who have done my hair here. But the sinks are super uncomfortable and there is no waiting area. It’s weird when you first walk in and way over crowded you don’t know where to go. High prices match the quality of cut but not the quality of the shop.

Solid cut, bleach, and dye from Shane. Got a neon orange, black light reactive color that has been dazzling everyone who sees it. Can't argue with the great quality of this color! Caring and thoughtfully cut by Shane, he was a great stylist and works ahead of time to really understand what you want. I didn't do my math correctly ahead of time (the bleach for hair as dark as mine is a separate charge from the color) so be sure you understand your services so you understand what you'll pay or you may be a bit surprised. Just check in advance, it's all on the site. Bad math was entirely on me.

Took eldest to get a gender-affirming haircut here. The staff and the overall environment is so welcoming, they took on board their ideas for the style they wanted and offered advice. I CANNOT recommend them highly enough! it’s a wonderful little salon. If you have someone who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community these are wonderful people. Oh and the haircut was amazing too! Thank you Ashe, you did AWESOME!

Dakota is absolutely amazing. I came to him wanting to chop my long hair off and go short! Every single time he has nailed what I wanted. I barely have to tell him he just reads my mind. On top of his amazing talent he’s a sweetheart and will definitely make you laugh. ☺️

I went to Above Ground not sure of what I even wanted to do with my hair, took a shot in the dark, and booked Ashe. My experience with them was incredible. I felt safe, seen, and protected. They walked me through my cut step by step to help me achieve my goals. The shop is clean and welcoming, and I felt like I was being taken care of by a master of their craft. Ashe was very gentle, confident, and lighthearted, everything I could want from a haircut. I highly recommend not only Ashe but any of the other artists at Above Ground.

Johnathan Doria has cut my hair twice now, and I have to say that as someone with anxiety around haircuts that I’ve never had someone treat me with such kindness. He has never made me feel guilt or shame for my length of time between cuts. He listens and asks helpful questions to understand exactly what I’m looking for in a cut. He has given me my favorite haircut thus far, and I fully trust him. I’ll keep seeing him for as long as I can. As a queer person, I am grateful for the space that Above Ground creates for me to feel safe and in community.
