Am new to the neighborhood & needed a wash & blow dry for an evening out. Barbara was WONDERFUL!!!! Friendly, accommodating with my schedule & my hair looked fabulous:):):) Highly recommend

I just happened to walk by this salon and asked if they could do my makeup and updo for a night at the Grammys. Barbara was a lovely lady and made immediate accommodations to squeeze me in. I am still in awe of her and her ability to see what needed to be done. My haircut and makeup turned out perfect. In fact it's the most perfect haircut I've every had. I didn't ask for anything in particular but left it up to her to decide and I'm glad I did. She also said to come back the following week to do my highlights and lowlights. Again, I did not tell her what to do but left it up to her to decide. I've never had a beautician know exactly what to do or what would look right on me as she did. I'm still in awe of her and her skills in seeing what looks best. I highly recommend her. I will now be flying back to Santa Monica just so she can continue to do my hair. She is the best!

You can read my long story below but I'll give you the bottom line right here: Barbara is an amazing artist. Her salon is a joy to go in. The atmosphere is not at all commercial, but quiet and peaceful (just what we need when we get our hair done). The cut and color you will get will make you wonder why you never noticed this special salon (3 doors East of Starbucks at 7th and Montana) before. And you will definitely go back. My story, and everything I know about Barbara: I am very aware of hair style, hair color and whether a woman has the right combination for the subtle coloring of her skin, even if it is cut well for the shape of her face. So when I want to find a new person to take care of my hair I never ask around, I look around. When I see a woman with the perfect cut and color for her, I ask her who is doing her hair. This is how I found American Beauty and Barbara. It took me a few months here in Santa Monica to be impressed by 3 different women. All 3 told me "Barbara at American Beauty." I know that sounds kind of crazy, but, for me it works. That happened 5 years ago. I started having Barbara do my hair. I am "older" and I know if my hair looks great I look great. So, vanity it is, but this is important to me. Even if I don't have makeup on, at least my hair is over the top fantastic. She is an artist with the cut, and I have learned so much from her over the last 5 years about how I can do certain things to help my hair on my own (I like to swim). It is the color that is so perfect. I have light skin and I am older. I have a lot of white, so I am no longer a brunette but a blonde. So many cookie cutter hairstylists just create the color hair they like with no concern with the skin of the client. Put the wrong color blonde on me and I either look orange or so pale my face disappears. She nails it every time. And as my hair changes, she changes. Also!!! I almost forgot. She has this amazing gel that she has created herself. We do it after the hair coloring and then we do just the gel 3 weeks later (I don't even have my hair styled. Just put on the gel, under the drier, and hair wet, I'm out of there.) This gel has transformed the texture of my hair. Instead of slightly frizzy and a little weak, it has become smooth and strong, and (this is actually true) I have more hair. She has a growing group of older women who are devotees of this gel. Barbara was a hair stylist in Paris for years. She absolutely loves what she does. She invented and patented a special hair straightener that protects your hair when it straightens it. She created this amazing gel described above. She is thoughtful, caring, and a pleasure to be around. I do not mean to sound like a "pitch." I just really love this woman and what she has given my life.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Frankie has been doing my hair for 10 years and does an amazing job. Her prices are very reasonable too. I wouldn't go to any one but her. She can do it all; color, cut, blow dry, keratin treatments and more.

BEST HAIR EVER. The bottom line: Barbara, the owner, is an artist. I've had a lot of carbon copy hair styles in my day, since I've been going to hair salons since I was a young teen. (Yes, I was a 13/14-yr-old fashion victim with "The Rachel".) They've all been good replicas of what is in the magazines, but never really suited me--never framing my multi-ethnic face or working with my unique features. Barbara cut, colored and styled my hair and FINALLY, this one works with my face and coloring. It is the most sophisticated, chic hair of my life. She is an artist; not your typical stylist who copies hackneyed styles out of a mag. Want trendy mall hair? Go somewhere else. The prices are completely reasonable--I would say she's even under-priced for our famed Montana Ave.
