Just returned from our time at Area. The sauna and cold plunge were lovely - it was our first time doing it and we can see the benefits. We would likely return. HOWEVER, there are some issues: The online interface for scheduling is a challenge especially if you’re trying to schedule for a couple. For that reason my husband had to call earlier in the week to make the reservation and that led to scheduling problems. When my husband called he explained we wanted to do a sauna/plunge together followed by massages. The guy at the desk told him “sign up for one online and when it comes through I’ll put it through for the two of you.” When we arrived there was no reservation for a second person AND the massage was scheduled for BEFORE the sauna (???) so the sauna was NOT ready or hot for us. In fact it never reached the desired 170 though to be clear we were certainly hot! The guy was VERY nice and professional but in the end we had to pay for the one massage (which we could not do b/c we were together) and was told we would get a voucher for another appointment. So now we kind of have to return in order to use the voucher! I feel we should have received a discounted experience for the total inconvenience and the not-hot sauna! Also: it seems they should give out water or have a water fountain given the price.

I love this place! The infrared sauna with cold plunge set up is great for a reset. Try the Irish seamoss in the fridge. Lather on before going in sauna. Makes your skin & hair so soft. The owner is super friendly and has a great sense of style. I love the annex outdoor spa at Planted café on Smith St in Brooklyn. See pic. Great package deals.

I had a traumatic experience after a 60 message. The next day had bruises on my neck and arms from the experience. Despite telling the masseuse that I was uncomfortable they continued pressing on parts that were deeply hurtful. Would not recommend getting a message here.

100% recommend. Ashley who worked there was so knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. The sauna itself was fantastic. They provided infrared towels and shorts. I didn't get to do the cold plunge but that's definitely on the list next time. They have a membership that let's you go 3 times a month for $90. Worth, every, penny! The benefits for your health are wild

I love this amazing facility. It’s small but cozy and everyone is so kind. I had a sauna and plunge pool to myself to start which was enhanced by my CBD gummy. The sauna connects with bluetooth. I had a guided meditation on my phone which I was glad to experience. I then got a 30 minute lymphatic facial and an hour long full body massage. Camila my massage therapist was a delight and so knowledgeable. Some of my services were upgrades and it was great to try out everything. I found it worthwhile and would like to some if not all of them again. I can’t to come back. I’ll definitely be signing up for the membership. Great value!

Very odd and unprofessional experience here. They were super nice and friendly which is the only reason for two stars. Otherwise, no stars at all. This was the most uncomfortable massage I’ve ever had. Unfortunately I truly don’t think they were a certified masseuse. My massage was uncomfortable, painful and the same areas that you are truly not supposed to massage like your upper inner arm or the back of your knee were rubbed on repeated over and over again. The same motion down my back and arms what felt like hundreds of times. The next day my back hurts very badly. 10/10 would never do this again. I wanted the massage to be over during the session because I was so uncomfortable. Lots of other strange unprofessional things while I was there as well from staff. Nice but unprofessional!

I have been going for a few years and have started up a membership. Loretta and Ashton to name a few are amazing and deliver amazing service while getting to know their customers. While they are a bit pricy than Restore Hyperwellness, the service and products here are much better and I feel better supporting a local Brooklyn business!

This review details my recent experience, which fell short of expectations. Upon arrival for my scheduled appointment: • The sauna was not prepared, despite my booking. • I was initially asked to reschedule after traveling 90 minutes specifically for this appointment. • After pushing back, I was forced to wait an additional 30 minutes for access. Hygiene Concerns: • I encountered another person's hair in the sauna room. Lack of Communication and Security: • The staff member on shift when my session ended left unexpectedly. • The new staff member was unaware of my presence and startled to see me exiting the sauna, raising safety concerns. • He admitted to potentially entering the room while I was changing, further compromising my privacy. Unsatisfactory Management Response: • I requested to speak with the owner and emailed my concerns, but received no response. Membership Concerns: • I was convinced to join a membership, but due to this experience, I'm glad it ends this month. Overall: This experience lacked the relaxation and professionalism I expect from a sauna establishment.

Love this spot when I need a last minute detox asap! They have many sauna rooms so I’m usually successful booking the night before for the next day (I tend to go weekday early afternoons). The saunas are clean and relaxing and there’s always plenty of towels. The guy at the front desk was super friendly and helpful today and even extended my time when I felt that the sauna hadn’t heated up all the way 20 minutes into my session. It eventually heated up and I got that detox that I needed! I was informed that the larger saunas get hotter than the smaller ones- so if you want hot, hot like 160s book a larger room! Definitely going to try that next time. I’ve been here 4 times now and have always had pleasant experience in the saunas, and will be returning again. It’s right next to the subways and street parking also has never been too difficult.

Came here for a New Year’s Day cleansing sweat to start my year. Max was very attentive and hospitable and provided great service with an easy going energy, which I appreciated after all the holiday hustle and bustle. He set up the large sauna room for me, provided me with a cold peppermint towel afterwards, and assisted me in Planted, the plant shop next door. I’m 5 feet tall and could lie down in the large sauna with my knees up (think constructive rest yoga pose). I’ll be back!

I had a highly disappointing (and very aggressive) experience last week at this establishment. The first sauna and cold plunge room facing 5th Ave had electrical issues, causing the fuse to blow out THREE times during my session. The front desk attendant handled the first occurrence well, being helpful and apologetic. However, the owner's response during the next two instances was absolutely lacking any basic understanding; she was incredibly rude, pushy and childish. Plus, she failed to apologize until checkout, and it was not sincere. Then she proceeded to aggressively upsell me during checkout. Come on. Despite the recurrent issues, the owner insisted, saying, "It's fine," over and over and refused my request to cut the session short. Each time the fuse blew, it took 5 minutes to fix, disrupting the experience again and again and well… again. Additionally, the owner made a tense phone call IN the sauna room to an electrician, further diminishing the relaxation. And that phone call was not conducted in a tone you want to be around. At checkout, she had the audacity to charge the full amount, and the owner repeatedly questioned us about drinks from the fridge (trying to charge us for every penny), and was pushing packages and memberships aggressively. The overall experience was chaotic, disrupted, inadequate and riddled with a phone call, and constant interruptions, making it far from the relaxing and intimate atmosphere one would expect. It's surprising that any business owner would find this behavior acceptable; it was truly embarrassing for her- and a waste of time and money for me. Never again.

I never knew why anyone would willingly subject themselves to cold baths, I lived in this area for many years and would walk by Area Spa all the time not knowing what an incredible (and all together hard to find) service it was offering. When I finally discovered the benefits of hot + cold therapy, I was discouraged at how hard they are to find in NYC, of all places. Then I remembered all of those times walking by ASB, a wash of relief came over me and thought to myself "they have been ahead of the curve!" Everyone here is welcoming, knowledgable, generous and patient. If you are on the fence about this sort of activity, this is the place to test the waters, I guarantee you will be coming back weekly at the very least. The facilities are clean and very well kept, the equipment is state of the art and private, and the prices are very competitive. It is maybe one of 3 locations in the city that is not attached to a large gym offering cold plunges, and the only private location (to my knowledge as a native NYer) that offers direct contrast therapy. Others require day passes, and you will be mixing with others during it. Area Spa is private, which makes the experience all the more healing in my humble opinion. This sort of treatment is medicinal, cold therapy has quite literally saved my life, I attribute much of that change and happiness towards the accessibility and unique offerings of Area Spa. Hands down, the best in the city. Give the outdoor one a chance too! It is peaceful and serene. There will be 0 regret in coming here, so don't hesitate!

I really was hoping that some of the bad reviews were wrong... Alas, here we are. On January 19th, a day of personal significance as it marks my late mother’s birthday, I sought to honor her memory by scheduling a self-care morning. I booked a 60-minute sauna session followed by a 60-minute massage, for which I was quoted the Groupon rate. Upon my arrival at noon, I was met with confusion. The saunas were not prepared for use, and my appointment was mistakenly scheduled for midnight, a time when the facility is closed. Consequently, there were no massage therapists available. The staff member present offered to start the sauna, but it would require at least 30 minutes to heat up, effectively reducing my session by half. When I attempted to reschedule the massage, that I had already paid for, I was informed that the staff member was unable to assist due to uncertainty about the massage therapists’ schedules. He suggested I call back the next day. Given the emotional significance of the day, I chose not to dispute the matter further and returned home. The following day, my efforts to reschedule the massage and sauna appointment were unsuccessful. Given these circumstances, I have decided not to pursue any further services from this establishment and have requested a full refund.
