I have been getting my haircut here for 45 years! Back then it was more of a guy's barber shop and Joseph wax the man. Over the years it became a place for everyone, a real neighborhood institution. Today Charmaine still gives the best haircuts!

This was a great cut and good service by Charmaine- the cutter and stylist. The rare here is very good for a wash, cut and dry. Charmaine was very nice to meet and chat with. She gave the cut exactly as I asked for. I will be there again for my next cut ✂️ Thank you!

Charmaine hair salon is my go-to for a lovely trim, blow dry and chat. It is not overpriced like all the other salons in the area, and they never cut 2 inches off my hair when I ask for a half-inch trim like soooo many salons do. I’m a regular and will keep coming back as long as I live in the neighborhood!

I always had a hard time finding some place where I didn't feel odd after getting a haircut. Charmaine changed that and I've been going there for years. Just delightful, friendly, and accommodating. I've had good luck as a walk-in too. I take my kids too (young teens) and they are positively glowing on the inside once they walk out. We're lucky to have this place.

Tried Charmaine’s salon for the first time. She is very sweet, welcoming, professional. Asked for highlights and a cut. Cut was good but the highlights were done poorly. Splotchy, inconsistent and not close to scalp. Showed grow out just two days after my appt. I called her to help and she just said “that’s how they’re supposed to be.” Disappointing.

After a brief search of hairdressers in the area, I decided on Charmaine’s. The reviews were good, particularly concerning long term clients. Charmaine was delightful, she easily fitted me in at short notice, even offering another time slot when a cancellation occurred. Every aspect of the experience was fabulous. The lady washing my hair did a wonderful job and after a consultation with Charmaine about what I wanted and what I wasn’t happy with, she offered a suggestion which was great. Charmaine was so skilful and so relaxed, she was also so lovely to talk to. My haircut is by far the best I have had in many years. When I come back to Brooklyn in September for my niece’s wedding, I will happily have my haircut by Charmaine again : )

Do you know how sometimes you can look good leaving a salon? How about feeling good though? Charmaine, the owner, is one of a kind. A philosopher and hair stylist all in one. Perhaps Park Slope‘s best kept (but shouldn’t be) secret.

TLDR: Cheap, unfriendly, horrible service. Not a quality haircut. I wish I would’ve just put the $47 I wasted here towards a nicer haircut. When I arrived, I was sent straight to get my hair washed without my stylist even looking at my hair (how can they know what I want/what kind of hair they’re working with without checking before it’s dripping wet??). At the shampoo bowl the person washing my hair legitimately only scrubbed one side of my head. I could tell they were right handed so they favored that hand a lot and i’m not kidding she only scrubbed the right side of my head. Then, I was ushered back over to the haircut chair and I requested just a 1/2 inch trim all over. The stylist scowled at me and laughed “1/2 inch isn’t much. You probably want more.” I explained that I just wanted a trim because I’m trying to grow my hair back out! The stylist blew me off and said “We need to do an inch.” Then, she started combing my hair out SO violently. I was visibly uncomfortable and she didn’t seem to even notice my wincing in pain and my concern for all the hair she was ripping from my head! The haircut was done in 17 minutes from start to finish (including washing) so you can assume how much time she spent checking my hair after she cut it (not long). When I got home I found that the bottom layers are a lot longer than the top. I have a blunt cut and did not request layers. She just didn’t do a quality cut. After she was done cutting she asked if I wanted it styled and I said no thank you just the cut. So she took the blow dryer and started doing a rough blow dry. I have very thick hair and I could tell she was just trying to get it done as fast as possible - whipping my hair back and forth with her fingers, pointing the blow dryer straight up (getting my hair unbelievably tangled), and burning me! When I winced in pain at the blow dryer heat she laughed and said “Ha. You don't dry your hair much do you?” That’s when I was ready to get out of there. I said “No I don’t. It doesn’t have to be fully dry. I think this is good.” And she took the hint eventually and stopped after about 2 minutes more of rough blow drying. When she put the blow dryer away she took some Biosilk stuff and rubbed it all over her hands. As she did that I said “Wait. what is that?” (I had flashbacks to being a little girl in JC Penny getting a haircut. I always hated how that stuff made my hair feel so greasy because I have already pretty greasy hair naturally) and before I could even blink she was running her fingers with Biosilk through my hair explaining that “this will make your hair shiny!” She didn’t even care to check that I wanted it when I displayed obvious hesitancy at it! It felt just as greasy as I remember! Anyway, I got up and paid and she didn’t say anything else to me. Again, I hate to say this about a small business but facts are facts and this haircut was not quality, good service or even friendly. Use the money you would spend here on a better cut.

I have being coming here for 16 years, since I was a teenager. Charmaine is an absolutely amazing person and a very talented/gifted hair stylist. For 16 years, I have not let anyone else touch my hair. The staff are all amazing, and you feel like you are in some kind of fancy spa...even though you are simply getting a few inches of hair cut...if even that. Go, you will love it!

Charmaine is great. The real test, during the lockdown this spring, my hair grew out beautifully. Friends commented on what a great haircut it was. Friendly salon. Laid back. Great cuts. Reasonable prices.

I've been coming to Charmaine's since the 80's when it was Joseph's. Always a great haircut. Charmaine is very professional and a wonderful person. She was GREATLY missed! So glad they're back!

I have been coming to this hair salon for past 20 years. My two sons got their first haircut ever here 17 years ago. The staff are polite, friendly, and really good at their craft. Many thanks to Charmaine, Joseph (retired), Hector, and everyone else.

My sister and I went to get our hair ombre'd. They did not do as we asked at all and basically just ruined our hair with bleach and was really rough while doing so. I am very upset cuz I've had good experiences getting my hair cut with Alex. But would never recommend this place to get my hair colored.
