I highly recommend working with Mona, she is extremely talented. Everyone at the salon was incredibly talented and kind. She completely fixed my hair. I highly recommend this salon!

I’ve been getting haircuts for my daughter and me at this establishment for several years. We always leave very satisfied and happy with our hair. Johnny cuts our hair, but we have once tried another when Johnny was away( a woman) and she was also very good.

Decent haircut for the uninspired. Nice atmosphere, nice people. Hardly listened at all to what I wanted and just gave me the default shorthair style the cutter was comfortable with. Might look good on someone else’s head.

Excel hair salon is by far the best hair salon in all of New York City. VERY PROFESSIONAL!!! And great prices. Definitely recommend!!

As far as I know it is customary that a customer does not leave the salon with dripping wet hair. Especially in the middle of November in NYC. I came in to this establishment primarily due to the convenient location, opened late and the shampoo and cut special advertised on the chalkboard. They were like a bloke and a half away from home. Upon entering they were pleasant enough however it was not welcoming. I spoke with the person at the front desk letting them know what I was coming in for and she proceeded to let me know the advertised service included just the wash and cut. I said ok and waited for my turn. I was shampooed and swiftly taken to the chair for my cut by a wonderful young Hispanic girl. She did a great job and was a joy to chat with. She completed the cut and sent me on my way. I was baffled when the service was completed. Never in a million years have I gone into a salon and not had my hair dried and styled. I was never even offered the service. I was so befuddled and bemused by these chain of events that I just paid a left. To my chagrin when the women at the front desk made certain to let me know the advertised special ONLY included the wash and cut, what she really meant was that’s all they would be offering me. Any reputable salon would make sure they let their customer know how much add ons cost. I was never afforded the basic courtesy. For some reason the woman assumed I could not or would not pay for an additional service. I have no qualms about saying there was some sort or predisposed prejudice. I would give zero stars if possible. PSA if you do not look like a certain demographic feel free to walk on by, this is not the place for you. The Aveda salon close to Fairways is your best bet. They are POC friendly. For reference this review is from 2 years ago.

This was my second time at Excel, and I was not disappointed. They squeezed me in for a haircut at the end of the day. Karen cut my hair, and she was super sweet and talented. She delivered exactly what I had in mind. Long, dead hair —> medium length w layers

Amazing service! Joanne is wonderful and her skills are unmatched. I showed her a picture of a balayage I wanted and she did not disappoint. Definitely going back to her and would recommend booking with her :)

I visited Excel Salon recently and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. Despite clearly communicating my preferences, the stylist was rude and disregarded my requests. Not only was their behavior unprofessional, but the final result did not reflect what I had asked for. Overall, I left feeling dissatisfied and wouldn't recommend this salon to others.

I wanted to go slightly lighter and they told me it would look slightly orange, so I said never mind. They then reassured me that it would look good and only have very slight undertones. They turned my hair completely ginger and then tried to go back to my old color when I said I didn’t like it. Now my hair is darker than before and looks very red still.

Really like my haircut, but pricing felt like a bait and switch. There was a big sign saying $40 for walk-in wash/cut and then they charged an additional $53 for blow drying it. They didn’t mention that would be extra, much less make the total over 2x as expensive.

Did the walk in service and was very pleased and lucky to have my hair done by Nancy G. Clearly a skilled stylist and reviewed photos with me to make sure I had a great look to suit my face. Highly recommend!

I totally lucked out by choosing Salon Excel! I’m not from the area, but it was convenient to where I was staying. Denise did my blowout. It was fantastic! Gina did my makeup. Amazing! I have received so many compliments on both. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 🥰

Please beware! I came in for a trim, and left with my hair being the shortest it’s been in five years. Yes, it was cheap, but I should have paid the extra cash to go to another salon that would have honored my request.

The staff was kind and my stylist really listened to my concerns and ideas. I did the walk-in special and added a blow dry for a total of $75 + tax, I believe.

This is the new Excel hair salon on 89th and Lexington ave. It was serendipitous that I stumbled upon this. I heard church bells, thought to see it and instead I walked straight into the salon right next to it lol! I was very sweetly greeted by the receptionist and Daisy who was my stylist and an angel sent on Easter. There was a special deal going on that haircuts were for 40$!!! Can u believe that! I couldn’t. Then I inquired about retouching my balayage and she gave a reasonable estimate on. I loved that I knew how much the total would be first so there are no shocks in the end! She understood my need sooo well, this is the first time in 8 years in NYC that I’m 100% satisfied! She gave me a great haircut, great retouch, couldn’t have asked for more! Got water in between and was well taken care of! Definitely recommend this salon even for first timers like I was! Happy Easter! I didn’t get the proper blow dry done hence it’s not all set etc, but that’s how I like it. The color and haircut are great!

The front desk was unprofessional. Tried to overprice the amount of a wash and haircut, when I told her the correct amount she proceeded with a made up excuse for the 'correct' price. PLUS I received the worst hair wash service ever, the lady was really nasty and rude. Johnny saved the day, because his haircut was amazing!

Very friendly people and inexpensive, but the haircut was rushed and uneven at the back despite being a simple straight cut. Make sure to check carefully!
