Ruth was incredibly kind, thoughtful, informative and all around amazing. They listened to my hair concerns, took the time to educate me and really achieve the goal I wanted. I made a huge change to my hair which I was nervous about and they were more than encouraging and supportive! I cannot recommend them and their services enough.

I have naturally curly hair but have never been to a stylist who specializes in curls. I've liked my curls but they always seem to be lacking in volume and definition. After consulting with Ruth it was obvious that the right cut with someone certified in curl hair design is essential. Also, how you style makes a huge difference and this wasn't something taught to me by my regular stylist. Ruth was so patient with all of my questions, she never pushed me into something I wasn't comfortable with. She explained in detail and so that I could understand everything she was doing as we went along. She made sure I could see in the mirror what she was doing so that I would know how to do it myself. I was very nervous going in but Ruth was friendly and I felt at ease right away. I also love that everything we discussed and all that she performed on my hair was sent to me in a follow up email outlining it all. She included videos and product options. (not just products to purchase from her salon but also from Amazon so I never felt like she was pushing for a sale). I look forward to my next cut with her and I would definitely recommend Hair Design by Ruth at Ame Salon.

Calling all Portland and Vancouver curlies, Ruth is AMAZING! I have long, natural curls that have typically been 2c-3a, but after my cut with Ruth it bounced up into the 3a-3b categories. Sooo healthy and happy! Ruth took plenty of time getting to know me, my curl pattern, and my goals for growth. She showed me various options for where to cut and why before getting started and then gave a master class in curl care as we went along. She uses a hybrid Rezo and Deva approach depending on what your hair needs and has great intuition for the individual curl pattern. On top of all that, she is just a delightful human and so easy to sit with! If I ever move away, I will have to plan every-6-month trips back to Portland to see her. :) Check her out, your hair will love you for it!

Ruth is an absolute gem and master of her craft ! She took her time and nurtured my curls back to life, also sent me home with a guide to help me maintain my wild mane! I’ve never had my curls look so springy, soft, and healthy! Highly recommend

Ruth is fantastic! I was immediately put at ease when they offered to mask up as soon as I walked in the door. She listened closely as I explained my hair goals and completely understood what I was going for, repeating it back to me to make sure we were on the same page, which made me feel like I was in great hands before we even got started. She’s super personable and knowledgeable with had lots of tips and tricks without feeling prescriptive. I had the feeling we were starting a collaboration with total respect for all I’ve learned about my individual hair in my curly/wavy journey. Everything we discussed was sent to me in a doc after the appointment which I thought was fantastic and something I’ve never had from a stylist before. It’s been a while since I’ve been so happy with my hair, and I’ll definitely continue getting my hair cut here as long as I can. And the salon itself is beautiful—lots of natural light, indoor plants, view of a lovely neighborhood. Just a wonderful experience all around!

Ruth is the best curly hair stylist I’ve worked with since I lived in Manhattan ten years ago. If you have curls, you know you can’t get your haircut like everyone else. Ruth is laser focused on listening to what you want, while honoring your natural pattern. She’s truly an artist that made me believe in my curls again. 10/10, you won’t be disappointed!

Ruth speaks hair. She intuitively cuts working with my curly waves so that they cooperate together for the easiest and best everyday styles! Not only have I been thoroughly impressed by her use of dry cutting to understand the flow of my previously frizzy waves, but she is consistently increasing her education on how to work with curls and waves. Every time I see her, I leave with a new understanding of how to better tend to my hair. She pours her soul into every cut and is VERY considerate of others' needs. She also caters to any personal requests such as quiet cuts so that you can have a relaxing experience. Her scalp massages melt me every time, I highly recommend the scalp treatments!

The best part, and there are many things to choose from, about a haircut from Ruth is her kind attention. She is so thoughtful about the process, taking time to consider all ideas and reassesses often. She brings her full attention to each haircut, which results in not only a great cut, but my totally confidence at each appointment. Every appointment with her feels like a true self-care time out for me. I love that she values continuing education and is always adding to her skills. Her recent dive into curly hair has perfected my style. I love the hairstyle we’ve worked on together for the past year or so. She takes into account the time I have to manage my hair each day and tailors the cut to my needs. A small part of me wants to keep this absolute gem hidden, but she, and the manes of Portland, deserve all the haircuts! Ruth is the best, I highly recommend her!
