HANDS DOWN THE BEST HAIR SALON I HAVE EVER BEEN TO!!! I moved from England and was looking for a good natural hair salon, for reference I have 4c hair and left with the best colour and silk press ever. I seen Fritz and he was the best, talked me through the process and made me really aware of everything happening. The salons vibe alone is very welcoming. Definitely will be going back😊

I was leaning on not leaving this review because I believe my bad experience doesn’t speak on the stylist themselves but that they may have been in the midst of a bad day but I have never been so disappointed about leaving a haircut like I was for this one, I mostly went in for help with how to part my hair and evening the length out in some spots but left with shaved sides which is the exact opposite of what I wanted, and nothing like the photo of what I was trying to go for I shared. I’ve been trying to be positive but I get really upset every time I touch the sides and think they really didn’t have to shave it so short. There was no energy/interest to do the cut and I can say they looked the opposite of thrilled to see me when I walked up. I should clarify now the haircut is not bad, it’s actually what I’ve already been doing for years for much cheaper. I came to this salon for help from someone who would know about styling more than a barber would but I feel like my wishes were ignored and they just went with what was obviously there before & just grown out and they trimmed it back down. I was given the most intense hair washing I’ve ever had, I wish I had said something at the time. There’s no way they didn’t have clumps of my hair in there hands at the end of it and it was before we even cut it. I can tell this probably isn’t how they are normally and I just got really very unlucky to get the brunt of whatever that was. I wanted to like the haircut, it’s not bad just not what I wanted or paid to get. I wanted to like the salon but I will never go back and can never recommend. I feel terrible complaining because I am anti confrontational so I didn’t outwardly show my disappointment then but it has really sunken in and I think this may be the worst experience I’ve ever had getting a haircut. I feel punished for something that wasn’t my fault, it’s the most bizarre thing to say about a haircut. I was a much happier person walking into the shop then leaving and I’ll be reminded until it grows back to where it was, which wasn’t long enough in the first place

I had a great experience today at Hair Play!! It was my first time going and had looked up curly hair cuts in SF and this salon had come up as one of them. Booking on their website was easy and I appreciated the reminder texts. PEGGY WAS AWESOME! She is a lovely human. She listened to my requests and gave clear, reasonable instructions on how to replicate my style. I have curly hair and needed a trim/style and she did exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Highly recommend and will return to have her make my hair beautiful again! My only note about the salon is that the parking in the area is not easy to find so plan ahead! Beyond that - PEGGY IS AWESOME. *and also the receptionist, she was so friendly and kind*

This is hands-down the most diverse, professional, and amazing salon in the city and the owner is absolutely amazing. They are usually booked up when I'm able to get my hair done, but I was finally able to go and I was so happy with the results and hair care I received. I will be coming back pretty frequently.

I don't normally write reviews but I am very disappointed with my experience with Hair Play Salon. My haircut was scheduled for 3pm today and they called me around 11:30am to cancel my appointment. Their reasoning was that Martina does not feel comfortable cutting curlier hair. I understand this and am glad she was honest instead of giving me a bad haircut. However, did she really have to do this on the morning of the day i'm getting my hair cut?! I have curly hair and it is difficult for me to find places that know how to cut it. I booked my appointment a week in advance and they had plenty of time to let me know. This is incredibly frustrating. Their response was just "so sorry blah blah". Like how are u gonna charge for a cancellation from a customer within 24 hours and then cancel on your customers with no compensation or genuine remorse? I'm also traveling in a couple of days so I was very excited to get my hair cut today. Safe to say, this was a very disappointing experience and I will be avoiding hair play. Going to snip2curl in nob hill instead. Thanks hair play! 🤥

I had a HORRIFIC experience at HairPlay, primarily due to the owner, Fritz Clay. He screamed at me, demanding I write a review about my experience, and even insisted I include his name. Fritz disrespectfully yelled at me in his salon in front of all his clients without provocation His behavior was appalling and unprofessional, speaking to me in a demeaning manner. FYI: As of 6.15.24 The salon does not have a late policy on their site nor booking site. It is also not mentioned in the appointment confirmation! This salon does not abide by their own rules nor do they take accountability for their actions. I scheduled my first appointment with Denise for 10:45 AM on Saturday. Running late, I called the salon and informed the receptionist I would arrive 10 minutes past my scheduled time. She confirmed with Denise that this was acceptable and told me over the phone. I arrived at 10:55 AM, checked in, and waited. By 11:30 AM, I had not been addressed, so I asked the receptionist for an update. She said she would check with Denise but returned without any information. After another five minutes, I inquired again and was told Denise had taken another client despite confirming it was okay for me to arrive ten minutes late. The situation escalated when an unknown man, later identified as Fritz the owner, confronted me aggressively without knowing what was going on. He invaded my personal space, yelled at me, and used exaggerated hand movements towards me in front of all his clients. Despite my many attempts to explain the situation, he continually interrupted and declared he was “done with the conversation.” When I asked about their late policy, he dismissed its importance, even though no such policy exists online. He then stormed off throwing his hands up in the air in the middle of me speaking, not hearing me out, and showing complete disregard for the situation at hand and the one he disgustingly created. Denise, the stylist eventually came to the front, explaining she took another client without apologizing, despite the approval of my late arrival. I left without receiving any service and will not return to this salon. Fritz's behavior was utterly unprofessional, and I have never been treated so poorly by a business owner. This experience was extremely disappointing and unacceptable. If I could leave this review with 0 stars I would, but I am obligated to put at least 1 star.

HairPlay is a fantastic hair salon for all people. Stacey, has been my stylist for years! Not only do they care for your hair’s individual needs, they treat everyone like family. I get compliments on my hair and it’s color all the time. Stacey also cuts and styles my husband’s hair too. We are devoted to Stacey and HairPlay. We are thankful to have a salon home.

I made an appointment days before for a consultation with Martina and when the day of the appointment came they told me my appointment had been cancelled for absolutely no reason even though I had confirmed in advance. First impressions matter, please stop wasting people’s time.

Very clean, nice, great music and art on the walls. They were nice enough to sqeeze me in a busy week. Marty did a great job on my haircut. But it was pricey $95 plustip.

I didn’t actually go to the salon however I did try their Hair Play product and OMG! It is a miracle and smells so delicious. It’s a hair foam for curly hair. My hair is type 2c-3a and I mixed a little of the heavier with the lighter foam to form a perfect mix for my hair. I haven’t seen defined curls like this since 10+ yrs ago!

I must say, Stacey is an absolute gem. So welcoming, so professional, so extremely knowledgeable and an all around fabulous stylist. I’ve been struggling for months to find the right person to take care of my hair and I have found the perfect person to do so in Stacey. Stacey took what I wanted to do with my hair from a short conversation and turned it into a reality. I am so happy with how it turned out and every little trick and technique he taught me today I will be implementing into my normal routine. I cannot stress how comfortable he made me feel as a new client and how he listened carefully to every detail. We also bonded over common interests and he quite funny and we shared a few laughs. Stacey epitomizes exceptional service and, as much as I don’t need any competition for his chair, I highly recommend him. Thank you, Stacey! See you again soon!

I got a haircut with Penny. Jt was the nightmare of my life. I came with hair upto my shoulders and told her I want it short by my face and I said I do not want layers, just a regular cut. She spent 1.5 hour and my hair was exactly where it was! I kept saying I wanted shorter, she said I can’t cut it short cause you don’t want layers! I guess layers is the only cut she knew, eventually she told me she had other customers and that my time is finished, I said I told you in the beginning I want it short and not layers this is not acceptable, she still gave me lots and lots of attitude and wanted me to leave. She charges me $85 for that!

I feel bad leaving a negative review because everyone there was really nice to me, but I left quite unhappy because the shape of my hair was changed in a way that I hadn't wanted, when I had only gone in to get a trim. I now feel like I can't wear my hair down until it grows out more, which will take a while. Other people seem to have good experiences so it could just be me, but I was definitely really sad over the result.
