Imagine a teenager with a lion’s mane that has gone over a year without a haircut. My kid finally decided it was time, but I know that it would be a pretty high bar for someone both skilled enough to manage a lot of curly hair, and know what a super mellow teenager actually wants. At one point during his haircut he turns to me and silently says, “OMG.” I give him a ??? look and he mouths, “IT’S GOOD!” He walked out feeling and looking like a million bucks. Thanks, Jo!

This woman has given my curl new life again and again. Like a magician she is able to change the shape without changing the length. I have been seeing Jo for years and she never ceases to amaze me. Don’t be daunted by the wait, she is absolutely worth it!!!

JoJo is a great hairstylist and communicator! I really enjoyed my haircut with her and loved the results of the cut! My hair has a lot More body and movement now. JoJo is an amazing curly stylist and knows what she is doing! Great experience and cut!

It was an amazing experience! I have a thick curly hair and I was looking for a great specialist in Portland area for a while. Jo did a great job! I have a great hair cut now, mu hair looks thicker and healthier also Jo thought me a lot of tricks how to style and wash my hair!

Jo is an expert! I came to her with an overgrown short cut I have been trying to grow out that was getting bushy and uneven. As soon as she started cutting I could see a huge difference, and could see the curls taking shape. I came away feeling like it was still the same length but laid perfectly and had more body and shine. She educated me on best practice for taking care of my specific curls and cut. I will definitely be returning!

I absolutely recommend going to see Jo! I trust her implicitly with my curls! She asked so many questions about what I liked and maybe wished about my hair before I even saw her. She is clearly very experienced and works with you to determine your hair hopes and dreams and then how to care for your hair and maintain it. I have been going to Jo for a couple of years with my curly hair and I feel so happy with how it looks and feels. Plus, Jo is just an all around lovely human! It feels like an honor to wear her art as part of my being! Go see Jo!

I love my hair now! Jo is a master at her craft. My hair looks good when I roll out of bed in the morning and I haven't had to wash it more than once a week or brush it all. Which is bonus for me. And my pigtails look perfect. Thanks Jo!! You are a true gem. :)

1st time using a specialist in cutting curly hair. I LOVE my haircut! I left with hair I loved. I have showered and been able to recreate the style. Jojo really did a great job showing me how to style my hair properly and I will go back when I need a trim.

Five stars just isn't enough stars to express how much I love my experience with JoJo! I I admit I'm a little high maintenance / very picky about my hair, and from the minute she started the consultation to the final result, JoJo listened to all my concerns and really ticked all the boxes! Not only does she give a GREAT CUT, she also took the time to help me with styling tips and tricks so I can confidently style my hair with very little effort so it looks amazing everyday! I'm so happy to have found JoJo!

I am so incredibly impressed with Jo. This was my first haircut with her after years of frustrating experiences with other stylists who just didn’t have a good grasp of the way my curly hair behaves. Jo really expertly observed what my hair does and delivered an exceptional cut that not only looks amazing but really simplified my hair care routine. This is truly the best my hair has ever looked and felt and I feel much more like myself when I look in the mirror. To top it all of she gave me so much great advice on how to style and maintain my hair so that I feel more in control of it day to day. Jo is truly magnificent at what she does and I plan to go to her for future haircuts as long as I can!

I had my first ever curly haircut with Jo in March. I've never learned so much in 90 minutes! My hair has become wavy as I've gotten into my 30's and I've struggled with how to cut and style it in a low-maintenance way. Enter Jo - she gave me exactly what I needed: a great style and ALL the knowledge I needed to maintain it when I left her chair. I had been doing so much wrong and now I'm working smarter rather than harder. I'm sending all my curly & wavy-haired friends her way! Worth the wait and worth the money, hands down.

Jo is a master, and I’m so happy to have booked her. I have fine curls, longer hair, and hair that tends to get build up easy and curls that fall flat on my head. I brought her a collection of loosely related inspiration pictures and she was able to read between the lines to understand what I was going for shape wise / goal wise. I never thought I could love my hair this much. Worth it! She’s super cool and made me feel welcome, and is great at making curly hair simple. Her follow up is also super informative and thoughtful. Can’t wait to go back ❤️

Jo is so kind and welcoming! She is also talented and knows what she is doing. This was the best hair cutting experience I have ever had and well worth the money! Jo really took her time and listened and understood what I was looking for. I have asked for this exact haircut from the last 3 hairstylists I had been to and on the 4th try Jo was finally the first one to actually give me my dream hair! Jo just gave me the best haircut of my LIFE!! I've had curly cuts before, I thought I knew all the things, I was expecting something good from this cut but she went above and beyond in every single way!! I asked for an effortless style that would celebrate my curls and she delivered. She took off barely any length (I told her I liked where it was at and she actually listened) but added SO MUCH VOLUME! I've received many compliments, a few friends even told me I look more like myself than ever. I loved spending time in her chair, I learned new tips and tricks, she recommended products that are actually helpful (not just salon expensive) and that she's tried and tested herself. Her styling lasted 3 days looking absolutely perfect, but after a day in the garden I (begrudgingly) had to wash it. And it still came out just as lovely and bouncy when I did it myself. I am in awe of this haircut, worth every penny. THANK YOU SO MUCH JO!!! I will be back :)

This is honestly the best haircut I have ever had in my life. I've generally struggled with getting haircuts, but all of my learned anxieties were washed away when I sat in Jo's chair. She was very attentive to my experience with my hair and how I care for it and had many really great tips on volume and product types that I have now implemented into my hair care routine. Her knowledge and experience is front and center, everything about her said she knows curls inside and out. The part that made me feel like I was in very good hands was when I saw in the mirror how something she was doing during styling wasn't working with my texture, so she adapted technique accordingly to find the best outcome. I realize that sounds pretty standard, but as a person who has watched nearly every one of my stylist's expressions slide steadily into panic as they keep plugging away with a method that is CLEARLY making my hair a frizzy nightmare, I wanted to cry with joy. She saw that frizz was happening and changed it up, encouraging my curls while still letting them be wild and free. I left her salon feeling and looking INCREDIBLE, I turned so many heads with my curls bouncing in the wind and wore the style again a second and third day, which is a first for me. I had gotten used to taking two showers on haircut day, the first so they could see my natural curl pattern the way I styled it before they cut it and the second to detangle the frizz and find out if the cut was any good. This review comes two months after my first Curlcraft appointment with Haircraft By Jo. Following my cut/style/curly hair lesson, I was chomping at the bit to leave a review about how amazing my experience was with Jo- from how understood and ‘heard’ I felt in my frustration with my inability to embrace my hair with confidence and with the knowledge gained throughout the experience. I sat in her chair, presenting with a chaotic mid-back mess of wave, some curl, and two years hair growth (void of hot tools) and left with more curl and definition than I thought was possible, along with a different level of confidence in what I could achieve post-cut on my own. After thoroughly digesting Jo’s advice from our appointment, I did choose to transfer to organic hair products, new-to-me hair ties/headbands, a hair buff for sleeping, as well as washing only once to twice a week. In addition to the perfect tailored cut, the above has definitely made an impact in the positive in terms of definition of curl, scalp health, style manageability, and continued hair growth for me. I am over the moon in love with my hair, and even more so with my routine as it is simple and stress-free. Above all else though, I feel relief and confidence on the daily; I cannot recommend Haircraft by Jo enough!

This was my second time in Jo's chair, and oh my gosh I couldn't be happier! I came with notes and pictures, Jo asked plenty of questions to make sure we were both on the same page. She checked in with me during the cut to make sure things were shaping up exactly how I had envisioned, and the cut is spot on exactly what I wanted. We talked about how much effort I wanted to put into styling, and after putting it to the test of washing and air drying at home, I feel cute as all get-out! Beyond just getting an excellent new style, I am so appreciative that Jo takes the time to explain the styling techniques that she's using, as well as giving alternatives, and explaining how these things can change your end results. Best Stylist in Portland for a reason! Thank you Jo!

I paid for the curl craft training for cosmetologist and it was the best investment in myself personally, as a kinky curly girl and as a stylist. Jo was very organic and honest in her lessons. I would definitely consider getting my hair cut in this salon as well. It’s truly wonderful to love and accept the natural beauty in your curls and educate and make someone else’s day.

I'm new to Portland and was searching for a salon/stylist in the Sellwood area. When I read Jo's description of her approach I was intrigued. I don't have curly hair, but I do have long, fine, sometimes wavy hair, which I don't like to style – basically it either looks good on its own, or it goes into a ponytail. Jo's method of cutting hair is like art – working with the medium that is each person's unique type of hair. It's quite possibly the best haircut I've ever had.

It was the haircut that kept on giving! It was great to begin with and it kept getting better as time went on. Jo is a true artist with curly hair and being an artist myself (with coarse curly hair) I really enjoyed her intuitive, unconventional, creative style.

She was very thorough giving me tips and direction on how to style my own curls. And, I’ve been using the same products she uses for years. I am very happy to have found Jo!

Jo is an absolute delight! She is not only a fantastic curly hair stylist, but also a phenomenal educator. For the first nearly 30 years of my life, I tried everything under the sun to tame my curls with chemical straightening (yuck! never again!), blow drying, flat irons--you name it!! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine learning to love my natural, rather loose and irregular curl pattern, until Jo! Jo taught me how to work with my curls to promote health, shine, ease of maintenance, and enhance the unique qualities that can make our curls so beautiful! Jo's training has been an absolute game changer! A great cut is one thing, but leaving the salon with new skills that promote longevity and appreciation of style, maintenance, health, and natural beauty has been truly transformative and such a gift. Jo is incredible!! I knew that I was going to get a great haircut from her, but she exceeded my expectations in every way. I came in with a fair amount of knowledge on haircare and products, but still walked away learning so much! The consultation was thorough and I felt really heard and understood. Got some great product recommendations that have made styling my hair really easy too. I wake up with my hair looking great and touching it up for the day is super effortless. Jo is also very fun to talk to. The salon is welcoming and beautiful, and if you arrive to the appointment earlier there are lots of cute shops in the neighborhood to explore. 11/10 recommend

Jo is such an experienced hair dresser and a pleasure to work with. She is attentive and listens to exactly what you want, and talks you through the whole process. I recently went in for my first curly haircut with her and on top of leaving with a renewed love for my curls and a haircut I loved, I also learned so much about my hair in the time I was there. She truly is a curl expert!

What a disappointment of a haircut. I waited months to get in to see Jo. I ended up with a mullet bob. My hair looks awful. It doesn’t suit my face or my lifestyle. I can no longer wear my hair in pigtails or a ponytail. I thought she would cut 2-4” and she cut 4-6”+! I was in shock when she showed me the back of my head and I could see the nape of my neck! It’s been a month and the hair cut has not grown out like Jo claimed. It is uneven and lop-sided. The left side and right side are not the same length. The back left is longer than the back right by two inches. Basically she gave me a version of her own haircut which is NOT my style. Just really disappointed that she didn’t consider how I wear my hair and how the haircut would impact my lifestyle. Not being to wear a ponytail has been a pain. It will take at least 6-13 month for my hair to recover. For the price of the haircut I expected a better experience and a better result . Jo is nice enough and I’m sure she does great hair but s this was a fail on her behalf. No one is perfect but for the price , the outcome better not look like a mullet
