Really nice stylists, good prices and good atmosphere...but my hair was pretty butchered after my most recent cut honestly. I asked for a simple chop to my shoulders and warned the stylist that I have curly hair, so it would inevitably curl up when it dried. I even showed him a picture of what I was looking for just to be safe. We also discussed the possibility of layers for volume, but decided against it. Despite these, my hair turned out completely different than what I asked for. In the end, my hair was cut almost to my jaw, with layers I didn't ask for, and somehow it was longer in the back and shorter in the front. Once it dried I also noticed a lot of stray pieces that were way too long and I had to trim myself at home. I didn't say anything at the time because when I left my hair was still wet, and the full extent of things didn't become clear until I got home. Another time I went here several months ago and asked for my dyed red hair to be returned to dark brown, or as close as possible. By the time the stylist was done, my hair was jet black. Again, not what I asked for. So yeah, this is the last time I will be coming here. Everyone is very nice and friendly, but I've been burned too many times.

DO. NOT. GO. HERE. My daughter went and the owner cut her hair. It turned out great. So I went, owner wasn’t there. In the middle of my haircut, the guy explained to me that he wasn’t use to cutting women’s hair, that he cut men’s hair usually! Thought hmmmm, but how different could the two be? Well if I was to judge by the mess he did, a lot! Okay. So I thought maybe he’s just not the right stylist for me (I think he wasn’t a stylist at all). Next time I got a different guy. My haircut was no better! Today my daughter went again (does she listen to me? Ha!). When she came back she was visibly upset. Her hair was incredibly straight and shiny. But when you looked straight at her, you saw that her left side bang was cut above the chin and very deep into the hair, and the right side bang was about an inch below her chin and n acceptable width. Now tell me, how could a stylist not see the unevenness? Especially when he had styled it so straight? I believe these people are not professionally trained. And if you do decide to go, ask to see their license. Because I am absolutely positive they do not have one. So in response to the “owner’s” review, I called the salon. He first denied my daughter had her haircut there, and then he said I must have confused his place with another. THEN he said I left a rave review before!! He asked if I was hairdresser, like that would matter in recognizing a bad haircut? Lots of red flags. Now I would post a picture of my daughter’s haircut, but she’s very private. But just take a look at the pictures posted of the salon’s work. Look at the ends of the hair of chin-to-shoulder cuts. THEY ARE FRAYED. Bad use by of scissors. Look at the woman with blue sweater on. What is that neckline? Was there an attempt to shave it? And then s that supposed to be a blunt cut? Just take a careful look at the photos. They speak to the lack of knowledge the stylist has. Also he asked my daughter’s last name and if there’s any backlash towards her, this owner will be held responsible. Just don’t go there.

I’ve been seeing Ignacio on and off for 20 years. I always leave feeling like my hair looks as healthy as it possibly can. I have naturally dry brittle hair but after I leave the salon it’s in great condition after my root touch up and all over refresh! I highly recommended Ignacio

Ignacio is an absolute gem. Talented, kind, and professional. He took amazing care of me and gave me the most perfect blonde while also keeping my dark base color natural. He will make you feel comfortable, the conversation is always fun, the salon is very cozy. Cannot recommend enough!!

Ignacio is a miracle worker and a very good listener and also patient. I came into the salon with the most to me botched highlight job that I had done at another salon the day before .I gave Ignacio a call he told me to come and we sat down he saw that I was nervous and he put me totally at ease we put a plan together and he got started on my hair. The outcome was unbelievable and beautiful, thank you Ignacio you have a new lifer customer!!

After moving to the neighborhood I needed a new salon to rely on, and this place has been nothing short of amazing! I have been here twice now and the stylists are so attentive with their work. I always leave feeling like the hottest person ever. I went in for a big chop my second time and despite such a huge change I am feeling more confident than ever and they really knew how to make things work with my face shape and the style I wanted. I will keep coming back so long as I live around here!!!

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I went here once a little less than a year ago for a trim. This was my first time getting a haircut in Chicago after moving from LA because I don’t trust many people with my hair—I would only get my hair done when I went home. But I desperately needed a trim and a friend had recommended me to go for the affordable price and close location. Stylist/owner washed my hair and began to cut it only to tell me I have curly hair and we should do a “curly cut” with internal layers. I said I trusted him because I never knew how to take care of my specific hair texture, the place had great reviews, and i was desperate to do something to make my hair less frizzy. He proceeded to cut DEEP into my hair, causing it to, yes, appear curlier, but also A LOT frizzier. Not to mention, he put some curl cream in after, diffused it till it was about 50% dry, and sent me on my way. I have never been to a hair dresser that allows you to leave with wet hair unless asked. I have also never felt so sad about letting someone cut my hair. Why am I writing this now? Almost a year later and this haircut continues to make my hair look terrible in various styles. It looks really thin and dead at the ends due to the tapering. I even got another trim 6 months after with my hairstylist in LA but as someone who also likes wearing their hair up, the cut makes me look like I have extreme breakage. So sad I trusted this man. Looking forward to it finally growing out. ADDITION: Appreciate the feedback, but this has been heavy on my heart for A YEAR. I felt very uncomfortable writing this review until now and was even more uncomfortable in the moment a year ago when speaking up. I actually cried after leaving A YEAR AGO. I barely trusted the stylist in the moment but thought I should have. Biggest takeaway—never trust someone who makes you question your gut.

I visited Illussion of Beauty for the second time in October. The first time was an amazing experience I had about 10 inches chopped off. The second time in I scheduled for a cut and dye. Which turned out amazing as well and he was honest about what would pair well with my skintone.(I forgot the stylists name sadly but he has glasses and darker hair) Now that it's growing out, it still looks like a fresh haircut styled. I'm about to make an appointment for my summer blonde 😊 Edit: I believe his name is Ignacio based on reviews!

Ignacio transformed my hair from a brassy orange to a beautiful warm blonde. He helped me decide on what shade I liked best with some hair swatches, which allowed me to get a very good sense of what the end result would look like. He also gave me some sample products to take home. His salon has an easy going and positive atmosphere. So happy I stumbled upon his shop and I’ll be returning!

The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and my hair looked great leaving the salon, however when i got home i realized my bangs were uneven. There was about an inch difference between the two front strands of my bangs. I believe this is because when cutting my hair the stylist did not section out the pieces but instead freestyle cut my hair on both sides. He also did not blend my bangs into the rest of my hair- both things i had to fix later in the evening. the shortest parts of my curtain bangs were also too short even for a fringe. for context they rest about an inch over my eyebrows when dry and styled. While it looks ok pushed to the side, it was not the look I was going for and would hope to have my stylist cut my hair evenly at least. I also think i paid over $80, so I am VERY sad about the price compared to what i received. Hair grows back but I am still disappointed in the service because I do want to support local businesses. I also want to mention this is my second time visiting this salon, and last time my hair was also cut unevenly, and i returned hoping that was a one time thing.

Every time I leave his salon, I am so happy with my services. In addition, I get so many compliments and I tell them I have the best person in the hair industry!!

My experience overall was not bad. Great customer service and friendly overall. This was, in part, my own fault for not speaking up about the layers in the back of my cut, but I didn't see the other parts until I was getting it fixed at another salon. Unfortunately, there was a triangular section randomly cut out on the side, and the layering was pretty uneven.

If you are LGBTQ this is a great experience. I have never felt so welcome at a salon. Today was my first cut there. The original stylist I scheduled with was ill, but they went above and beyond to squeeze me in same day. Everyone extremely friendly. Great cut by Ignacio, and Sheri (please forgive me if I misspelled your name) provided 5 star service. Can't wait to be a regular.

David did such an amazing job on my hair. I have so much hair and I wanted something pretty extreme and David made sure it was done exactly the way I wanted and to the color I wanted. David was super thorough and even did a test beforehand to make sure it would turn out as we hoped. This place is always my go-to whenever I need an extravagant change, or even just a trim. All stylists here are also super fun and nice! Thank you!!

Ignacio Ayala is truly a gifted colorist and stylist. I am in Chicago for a month and came in mainly to have my roots done. He matched the color perfectly and also blended in the lighter ends. My hair is not easy to cut but he gave me a very flattering trim and style that made me look ten years younger. I am only disappointed that I don’t live in Chicago so I can’t see him every month. I’ll be back for sure next time.

Plus he gave me such great advice on how to take care of my hair properly and gave suggestions on some specific products, he is very knowledgeable, kind, and fun. Listen, this is long overdue. I’ve been coming to this salon since it opened last year and I could not be more grateful for Ignacio. More than anything, he’s a kind, friendly person, who takes great care to create an atmosphere of warmth in the salon. I live very close and love that he will always wave to me through the front window when I pass by with my dog. At this point, he’s more than just a neighbor! He has cut and dyed my hair so many wild color combinations at this point, and I always trust his suggestions and ideas. I always leave feeling like more of my authentic self. He’s quick, thorough, and highly skilled. Do yourself a favor and come to this salon! If ever I move, Illussion of Beauty is one of the reasons I’ll be sure to stay close to the area.
