I came to Layers after a great recommendation from a friend, and received the worst haircut of my life. I showed Charles reference photos and was very specific with what I wanted - a blunt cut with no thinning out, very minimal long layers, cutting off 2.5 inches (my hair was several inches past my collarbone). What I received was a shoulder length, shaggy, heavily layered and thinned out, point cut bob. I barely have enough hair left to put in a ponytail. It looks bad enough that I’ve resigned to wearing it up until I can cut off the ends. Do NOT come here unless you like your hair very layered and thinned out, or unless you’re prepared to be extremely assertive about your cut (in my opinion, you shouldn’t have to be prepared to tell a stylist to stop what they’re doing mid cut, and I certainly wasn’t…). Charles did a good job with my face framing pieces, but the rest of my hair is ruined for months.

Perfectionism is what you want in a hair colorist and hair stylist. That's exactly what you get when working with Charles. I've been lucky enough to maintain what I can even in between being laid off from work and being tight on cash (luckily they offer a discount when paying with cash!). Thank you for your expertise and honesty over the years. It's been a joy to work with the entire staff as soon as I enter the door. I'm going to miss everyone! Thank you for your blessing. I will go and have fun :)

I showed a picture and requested a basic 1in haircut with touch ups on my layers, and when the guy was done, the first thing he said was, "I know it's not like the picture." The picture was of me the most recent time I got my hair cut, so I knew it was possible on my hair type because it was me and he was working on a grown out version of that haircut. He thinned out my super thick hair so much that you can see through it, and it can be barely put in a pony tail. I had very clearly communicated exactly what I wanted done in the first place, to which he agreed and said he could do what was in the picture, and everything was totally disregarded. He also trimmed and cut on my dry hair, then used a straightener that was visibly smoking a lot when used on my hair. 0/10 would not ever go back or recommend.

The best haircut I’ve ever had! I have long hair that reaches my waist and my haircut was only $70! They cut my hair with so much care and attention to detail. I highly recommend and will definitely come back ❤️

I LOVE this place. I’ve been coming here for years, they’ve changed locations, changed staff, and still fantastic. They charge fair prices and do amazing work. Highly recommend Charles - but all staff is wonderful.

Fantastic experience. I asked for a hairstyle that would give my fine, straight hair volume and the style I got is perfect. I feel like he really took his time to get everything right and everyone was friendly and professional. It was extremely reasonably priced as well! Highly recommended.

Had a hair cut with Sam and love it. Been getting so many compliments since I left the salon!!! The salon is small. Nothing fancy. Not much of wait time. I also had my root color done there . It was OK. I'd reccomend it if you are in for a cut and need a to get roots done too. But the hair cut was a different level. Excellent.

I’ve been living in New York City for nearly a decade now and it’s taken me a decade to find the only place I can trust. Layers is small, neatly hidden, and honestly I love it so much I hate the idea of it being conspicuous. However, I have to say, after visiting three times now, that Charles and the salon assistant are so warm and care for your time there. Despite my hair cut technically being an hour later than I’d anticipated, the assistant talked me through when I was getting a wash, when I was getting styled, when I was getting the actual cut. Charles on the other hand is so detailed, so thorough, and so consistent! Plus, the 10% off promo if you pay in cash is always appreciated! A full high end salon experience for less than $80, including tip?! Count me in!!!

Just got about 2’ off. They did a wonderful job. I loveeeee it! Everyone here is really sweet. They have a variety of small snacks and drinks when you arrive and take time with your individual needs. Really amazing!

The worst haircut and balayage I’ve ever had. I usually go to a higher end place to get my hair done, but it gets expensive for balayge and a friend mentioned this place to me. The appointment took a miserable 4.5 hours (should take maximum of 3) and my haircut came out extremely choppy and short with no layers like I asked. Charles did this cutting technique in which he thinned out my hair (I have pin straight, extremely thin hair already) by cutting down the hair in the back 4 inches from my head which will take MONTHS if not A YEAR to grow back. He did this even after I said it’s not what I wanted. As for the balayage, my hair looks orange and extremely fake. He used very big strands for the balayage and painted the entire bottom half of my hair. I’ve been getting balayage for 2 years and know a bad one when I see one, and this is awful. I left the salon sobbing. I called back to ask them to fix it and they said they’d call me later (never did). At this point, I don’t trust them to fix it anyway.

I had such a lovely experience with Charles! Cannot recommend him more. I got a haircut – I have very thick hair and so most of the haircuts I've got in the past have left my hair looking boxy at the ends. But Charles spend so much time trying to figure out exactly what I wanted and executed exactly that. He didn't do anything half-heartedly – he seems like quite the perfectionist and he really takes pride in his work so he will make sure to do the absolute best he can on any client. He even kept the salon open after hours just so he could finish and style my hair perfectly. He is dedicated and extremely reliable. I am definitely going back and making him a regular. On top of all of that, the haircuts are so reasonably priced. I got a wash, haircut and styling for $70

Assistant dropped my head in the sink while rinsing my hair. He then burned my ear, during the blow dry, didn’t brush my hair at all, then he just left me, and left for the night. They take much longer than normal. I’ve been there until 10 pm before. The guys are not chatty at all. During my first appointment with Charles I was asking questions, and he cut me off and told me to let him finish talking before I asked anything. I liked Charles, but he knew I was extremely upset that night and his only explanation was that the assistant had told him he had 5 years experience, but he didn’t like him either, so it was the assistant’s last day because he wasn’t professional. But my entire experience with this salon has not been professional. I mentioned in another review that my hair was breaking with their chemicals, and she told me I was over processing my hair- but if they look back at your appointments, and noticed that I was too frequent (though 5-6 weeks is supposed to be acceptable) why wouldn’t they suggest you spread out your appointments? I was never told I should go a certain amount of time between.

I have been coming to Layers for the past couple of years and every experience I have ever had there is top notch. They are so caring, kind, professional and they really take pride in their work. They take their time and make sure you leave with exactly the look you came in for. And the clientele ranges to include all styles and looks- so, I am confident that they can do anything when it comes to hair! I tell all of my family and friends about Layers and how awesome everyone there is. I am so glad I found Layers a couple of years ago and it will continue to be my go-to hair salon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

My balayage came out beautifully! Charles really has an eye for hair, I’m so impressed with his work! This was my second visit and I’m looking forward to my third. Everyone was friendly and wearing masks. There is a temperature check at the door and a Covid questionnaire for your safety.

I asked for a cut to control split ends and give the hair a bit more shape. I had the feeling the stylist didn't even really understand me since his English skills were low. The washing of the hair was super weird - I wasn't asked if i'd like a certain kind of hair mask and he scrubbed my head like a pan with something stuck to the bottom. It was very unpleasant and there were random long pauses where he didn't wash, rinse or work in product. There was no head massage or anything nice to this wash, it was cringy the whole way through. When drying the hair with the towel he rubbed it in the terrycloth towel like he was wringing it out, which is not good for hair at all. When he took the towel off I had so much frizz and he could barely comb through anymore. When cutting the hair he used a method to thin out hair which we never talked about and I didn't want. When blowdrying the hair, he worked the hairdryer through my hair like a monsoon , which tangled my hair horribly. Instead of changing the method, he just tore my hair apart with his fingers and continued on to blow drying with the same method. The cut itself and styling was fine, but that was about it, will definitely not come back and would not recommend if you look for a relaxing haircut experience.

This salon lives up to its name. My stylist Ming restored layers to my long hair to correct a blunt cut I had received elsewhere. He is very skilled and a good communicator who let me know what he was doing at every step of my haircut.
