I love this hair salon and I love Carlisa! This was my first time getting my haircut in 9 years. I’ve had a lot of really bad curly haircut experiences and was very nervous to go in. Everyone was welcoming, I was offered a warm drink. The cost of the curly haircut was pricey but I understood why as I went thru my entire service and it was worth every penny. You are not only paying for a haircut but curly hair education for taking care of your own hair. Carlisa walked me through every step of what she was doing, she was honest about what I needed to work on and focus on. I have not blow dried my hair in year and she let me know it was time to get a hair blow drier if I wanted my curls to come out nicer. She shaped my hair beautifully from what I wanted and kept my in check about not going too short so I could still pull my hair back like I wanted. I respect her so much for her level of curly hair knowledge. She answered all my questions and my curly hair has never looked better than how she did it. For aftercare, following her instructions the best I can while still learning I have already seen an improvement to my curls. I will forever be coming back to this salon as long as I live in chicago. I really want to express my gratitude to Kelly. She told me exactly how to restore my healthy waves. I also asked her to style my hair while preserving its length, and she gave me great advice on how to maintain it. I highly recommend her for styling—Kelly is awesome!

Always love coming to this place because my hair always looks amazing coming here. Any curly girls who need a salon: this is it. I’ve seen Chantal and Laura and they are both lovely humans who are so skilled and amazing at what they do. The place is also filled with plants which, as a plant obsessed lady makes the experience so enjoyable. It’s like getting your hair done in a hobbit hole in the woods 🧙🏼♀️ 🤩

I thought I had finally found my go-to salon (really liked the cuts I got from Laura), but the management/customer service I experienced this week is sadly the reason I won’t be returning. I had an appointment scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Monday morning I woke up with terrible congestion and a nasty cough. The salon’s cancellation policy is 48 hours notice to avoid a cancellation fee EXCEPT if you are sick or have a family emergency, in which case they ask for as much notice as possible. I left a voicemail and emailed the salon Monday morning (over 24 hours before my appointment) and asked them if I could reschedule without the cancellation fee since this was due to illness. I was told that because it’s less than 48 hours until my appointment, I would have to pay 100% of the cost of my cut unless they could find someone to fill my appointment slot. They said this was the policy outlined on their website. I pointed out that this is not what their policy says, as it includes an exception for being sick. I am honestly quite surprised that they stuck by this and said that the only way to completely avoid a fee is to give 48 hours notice. As everyone knows, it’s not always possible to give 48 hours notice if you wake up sick. Even their own policy online doesn’t require 48 hours notice for being sick, but they refused to acknowledge that. I was trying to do everyone, including the salon staff and their other clients, a favor by staying home and keeping my germs to myself, but I wasn’t willing to let them charge me for it. Luckily they ended up finding someone to fill my spot, but if they hadn’t, I would have gone in for my appointment despite not feeling well and would likely have exposed my stylist, the staff, and other clients to whatever I have. I’m shocked that they would have been ok with this. I asked for a manager to call me and also emailed the management email address, and never got a response. I’m wondering what they offer to clients whose stylists have to cancel with less than 48 hours notice due to illness or family emergency - do they then get free cuts? It seems only fair since clients have to pay 100% in that scenario. I’m disappointed in the management for having such an inconsiderate and unsafe cancellation policy - this only discourages clients from letting the salon know that they are sick, which then exposes staff and clients to their illnesses, and I don’t want to be present at the salon in the event that happens.

Horrible customer service. I had an appointment that was scheduled for 2 different times slots(was not communicated to me). I received a call the day of my appointment stating I was late and appointment was cancelled. It was my interpretation that appointment was later in day since I received two emails. I attempted to reach out to management regarding my concerns and was constantly directed to email my complaints and was denied ability to speak to the manager. I was told the manager was on site but she will only speak through email. In addition it was acknowledged in email that it was the company’s error regarding scheduling but I still got charged for their mistake. I will never go back to this hair salon. Very unprofessional.

I have been coming here for a few years now and I love this studio for my curly hair! Jasmin is the stylist that cut my hair today and she is amazing. She made me feel comfortable and I love the cut. She styled my hair beautifully afterwards. I can’t wait to come back to see Jasmin!

Jasmin is phenomenal - I've never been so happy with a stylist and with my hair. Not only do I feel comfortable with expressing what I want with my hair, but I feel totally confident she'll listen to me and get it done. The salon is super clean and cute. You can tell everyone is kind and capable with curls - an unfortunately rare combo! And honestly the prices are incredibly reasonable for the skill.

Let's get directly to it... It's costly, yes, but so worth it! If you have curly- unruly hair, they will whip you into shape. Use your discretion on purchasing the products as I've found there are some other great ones on the market for less. The nice thing is, they don't push product sales, but they do make recommendations. All-in-all... you deserve to treat yourself to this experience. You may pay hundreds, but you'll walk away feeling like a million bucks.

This review is based on my experience with the front desk staff - not the stylists here (I only had a consultation and didn't get my hair done by anyone). I had a consultation with someone who was nice but wasn't familiar with the coloring techniques I was looking for and who it wasn't quite a match with. I asked them for a different recommendation of someone who was familiar with the techniques I was looking for or who might be better able to turn my grown out roots into a balayage. After this their front desk staff essentially said "sorry, we don't have anyone we'd recommend for you, good luck elsewhere." Yikes.

I have been a client here for maybe 12-13 years. Their shampoo bowls are very comfortable to use for those with neck and back conditions and the stylists are very helpful to make sure you aren’t in pain. Lisa has been my colorist for years. She is kind, talented, and a pleasure to chat with (she is very funny). She is great at texturing my hair. I have a big spot where it always gets overgrown and heavy. The salon is always super clean and is so calming with all of the carefully taken care of green plants. I receive honest recommendations for which products out there to try and which to avoid. Congrats on expanding your space to the other part next door!

I made an appointment online and had a deposit/hold of $230 since booking and a few days prior to the appointment I was requested, by email, to give card Info on the phone to hold my appointment. I was told that their online systems weren't connected and as a result card Info had to be entered manually so I requested to cancel the appointment. Later in the exchange they offered to allow me to give my card info in person at time of appointment. The email responses were prompt and courteous, but having them request card info over the phone after having already paid a deposit rubbed me the wrong way.

I waited patiently for my appointment for six weeks, and two hours previously to it I received a text saying that my stylist had an emergency and they needed to cancel my appointment cause no one could take care of me, having to ask that day off at work I lost a lot of money.

It’s always a pleasure to come at Penny Lane Studio. Since my first appointment, I’ve always felt very comfortable from the moment I check in to the moment I leave the salon. I like Laura and her style in a special way because she understands what I am looking for and she makes my dream haircut come true. I will keep requesting her and I will keep choosing Penny Lane.

Ok. Got my hair cut here and when i walked out, my hair was amazing, obviously! Two days later, i washed and restyled myself. And it is still so amazing!!! It's soft again! There's texture and layers! It moves! Carlisa has the hands of an angel!! Can't wait to go back! ❤️❤️❤️

Penny lane studios is the only place (besides the salon I work at) that has taken 110% care of me. I’m not used to an efficient, caring, thorough service. I had the pleasure of having Kyra as my stylist and she is just a ray of sunshine. Hands down the best cut I’ve ever had in my life and now I’m able to show off my curls and feel confident doing so! I have very long thick hair and no one wants to spend time on it. She made me feel special and like I wasn’t a hassle to work on/with. Thank you again penny lane studios and especially, Kyra!
