I absolutely love this place. Farrah is amazing every time I’ve been. She does exactly what I ask for and it looks awesome every time. I’ve gotten my hair cut a few times and a balayage. Always a great experience, even with other stylists!

I ❤️ Queen of Swords! Kay’s been cutting my curly hair (3B-ish for reference) and they’re amazing. Patient, listens to my concerns/long term goals for my hair. Highly recommend! Plus the environment is so warm and safe. So happy to have this salon around!

Have had 2 wonderful haircuts with Meg. It’s a tiny little salon (warning, you may have to wait outside if you arrive early!) but the stylists are warm and wonderful! Meg does an amazing job with curly hair, gives me a dry cut, a wash, and styling and drying within my hour appointment. She always listens and makes me feel heard. Big appreciation for the whole team!

Hannah you are a lifesaver!!!!!!!!! Wow where do I even begin. I had booked an appointment for extensions with a different salon excited and ready to feel so beautiful and confident. Turns out the extensions were put in horribly, they refused to cut and blend them, and my birthday was only in two days. I had looked absolutely insane and I had genuinely felt like all my self love had dissipated from my body. I called so many salons trying to get a spot explaining my situation begging and pleading for a cut, but absolutely no one could take me. At this point it felt like a horrible joke and that I would just have to rip them out of my head until I finally got a response back from Hannah from queen of swords. I cannot even begin to explain on this review how incredibly understanding Hannah was about my situation. Reaching out to me knowing it was my birthday and trying her best to make sure she could fit me in as early as possible even though she had a fully stacked day just to help me gain my confidence back. I have never been to queen of swords before and I had never met Hannah, and she was easily one of the kindest people I have met this entire year. She cut these extensions and I looked like me again. I genuinely don’t know how she did it. Its moments like these that restore my trust in people. Hannah is a professional she will make you feel absolutely beautiful, and she knows exactly what she is doing. She is kind and caring and I am so thankful for her. Today is my birthday and I feel so gorgeous all to her. Thank you Hannah, thank you hannah, thank you.

I wanted to wait at least a full week to leave a review (especially after my last haircut at another hair salon that left my hair looking like an uneven mushroom that was a nightmare to style). After washing and styling my hair myself with the very few products I have at home... I can confidently say that Megan gave me one of the best haircuts (if not THE BEST) I've ever had! Aside from being super sweet, Megan is definitely talented/educated in curly hair. She knew exactly what I needed and gave me a fun, easy to style, shaggy haircut (with bangs to die for). I love it to death! Worth every penny!

[TLDR: Hostile, majority-white environment] The first time I visited QOS, I had a great bang cut from Kay. I was nervous going into my appointment because I was expecting cold, gentrifier white people energy from such an establishment. To my surprise, Kay was very kind and welcoming into the space. Happy with my experience, I asked her about hair coloring and she recommended Farrah. [no complaints w/ either of these hairdressers] A couple weeks later, I came in for my hair coloring consultation. I arrived exactly on time. It was rainy and cold outside. When I knocked on the glass door, Markee (name learned later) refused to make eye contact with me although they could see me and my partner through the glass 2 feet away. Finally they opened the door and blocked our entryway and rudely said that they don't take walk-ins. I explained I had an appointment, and instead of inviting us in to wait on the couch like Kay did before, Markee told us to sit on the wet chairs outside barely covered by an umbrella. It was cold and we were getting wet so we asked again to enter. Markee reluctantly let us in. Upon exit, my partner told Markee that telling us to wait outside in the rain when there were seats inside was inappropriate. Instead of taking our concern seriously, Markee said "it's policy, have a good day", going back to reading their book as if we weren't there. It was made clear to my partner and I both being Latina, and my partner being Black, that the gentrifier white-majority space (they don't even have a single Black hairstylist listed on their website despite being in a majority Black and brown neighborhood) and their exorbitant prices is clear that they could care less about treating people who aren't like them with kindness and respect, letting alone cutting/coloring their hair. The entire time, everyone in the salon did not make eye contact with us and made us feel very uncomfortable. Aggressive white women strike Bushwick again.

I wanted to wait a couple days to see how my hair sat with me before leaving a review but wowow, definitely the best haircut I've gotten since I started keeping my hair long. You can tell these people really know what they are doing. The are curly hair scientists/artists/engineers/magicians. Pricey but worth it!

I’m so happy I found this place! I used to see Megan years ago and found out she was here now so I decided to see her at her new digs. She is a wizard! I don't know how she is able to be so charming and fun to talk to while giving me the best cut ive had in ages. Time and locks flew. She's seriously the best and an amazing human to boot!

I have been coming here ever since I moved in the area. Markee never disappoints and I always leave the salon with confidence. I have learned to embrace my hair texture and Markee gives me all of the tips and tricks to manage my curls. Never in my life have I have this many compliments on my hair! The salon itself is so cute with lots of cool art and house plants to feel relaxed during your service.

I couldn't be happier with my experience at Queen of Swords! I traveled for 2 hours with high hopes that my bad haircut and color I'd gotten could be corrected, and I had the extreme pleasure of working with both Megan and Markee. Both were incredibly warm and welcoming and SAVED my hair! I am thrilled with the haircut and color correction I received at their extremely skilled hands. The true test was the next day when I realized there were so many things I could do with my hair now, because it looked so cute no matter how I did it. Absolutely go to them. You won't regret it!

I have been seeing Markee at Queen of Swords and could not be happier with my hair. I recently wanted to change styles and Markee did a fantastic job giving me a cut that took the essence of the inspiration pics and fit me perfectly. My hair is super easy to style now and I absolutely love it! 100/10 would recommend going to queen of swords!

She's amazing at taking specific requests and making them really work for my hair and lifestyle. The salon itself is cute, comfortable and welcoming.

TL, DR: Stylist Diamond cut off significantly more hair than requested on myself, after cancer treatment, during first post grow “trim”. This review is only for stylist Diamond. I am hesitant to write a negative review because I really hate to affecting someone’s business during a recession. On the other hand, I would have appreciated seeing this review before going through this trauma, which I am only able to recount now, nearly about 10 days after I receiving the chop. As someone that grew up in the 90s/early 00s when it was uncool to have so much as a slight wave to your hair, let alone curls, I have had my fair share of bad haircuts. As most “curlies” know, taking an inch from curly hair makes the curls shrink and appear much shorter. I have always trimmed my own hair since moving to nyc, as I just need the split ends nipped, but decided to this highly rated salon which specializes in curly cuts. I underwent chemo and radiation 2 years ago, losing about 1/4 of the hair on my head, and deeply damaging the rest, due to the toxic chemicals put into my body. I had not touched it since, as the process of watching your own hair fall out as a young woman is incredibly traumatic. I tried to book with the owner, who is currently unavailable, so instead booked a consult with Diamond, to make sure I felt comfortable with the stylist before committing to a cut, as I was very nervous. The consult went great. Diamond was very personable and chatty, and put me at ease. I mentioned I made a consult for a trim, which felt a bit silly, but the reason was that I had never had my hair trimmed by anyone since losing a lot of it due to treatment and was nervous. We discussed how much she would cut off, and that it was a dry curly cut, and after would be styled and she’d show me some different techniques on styling my curls at the end. When I showed up a few days later for the cut, it was like she was a completely different person, very cold and not very friendly. She didn’t seem to remember our consult at all, asking me to remind her how much we were taking off. when she showed me on my hair what she thought (about 2-3 inches), i said no not that much, just the ends. She proceeded to dry brush out my curls and cut it section by section - basically a wet cut on dry hair. This was super confusing and off putting to me because I have never experienced a curly cut that would brush my curls out. I felt like she kept revisiting the same sections and trimming more and more and started getting really nervous but couldn’t really tell how much was being cut because my hair was a poof ball from being brushed out. I tried engaging her in conversation multiple times but she was consistently cold. She never once checked in with me at all, rinsed and washed my hair with scalding hot water, never once asked if the temperature was okay (this was also strange to me as I never use heat on my hair). I had to ask her what the products she was putting in my hair was, and asked her to style it to “tame the curls” as I was so traumatized by how much had been taken off after seeing it wet in the mirror. She never said a single thing about the way she was styling my hair and dried my hair on a heat so high it was burning my scalp. Even when we were finished she never even told me to total or gave me a receipt. This was a terrible experience all around as I would say 2-3 inches was taken from my hair, which will likely take 4-6 months to regrow. In addition I now have spend time and money to buy new styling products to figure out how to style my much shorter hair to elongate the curls so i feel more like myself. I have been avoiding mirrors and couldn’t even bear to wash my hair for a week because I still am so traumatized, being forced to relive the trauma of hair loss once again brought back a lot of horrible memories tied to my cancer treatment.

i’ve gotten my hair cut here twice, and this last time confirmed QoS as my new go-to salon. i came in with some mashed together ideas for my new look, and Hannah was patient and wasn’t afraid to ask questions and check-in. i’m so happy with my haircut!! this was the first time in a long time that i felt at peace and affirmed (especially as a trans person) in a salon chair. thank you Hannah, Kay, and QoS!!!

I have followed Megan for years, even from the previous salon. Megan is the best stylist, especially for wavy-curly hair (like mine) and coloring. I trust Megan to style my hair, because every time, I always feel great and confident after. She is also excellent in dry cut (which is great for wavy-curly hair) and my hair grows very nicely with her cut. Last but not least, she is also an amazing person to be around.

The salon is a comfortable and welcoming space in every way and I always look forward to my appointments there. The rest of the folks at the salon are lovely and every experience I’ve had there has been overwhelmingly positive. If you’re thinking about booking an appointment here, don’t think twice just do it!

Megan has been my stylist for many years now and I'm very happy to follow her to Queen of Swords. She knows just what to do with my thick, wavy/curly hair, and has guided me through pixie cuts, French bobs, and everything in between. Sitting in her chair is always a fun, relaxing experience!
