He's been cutting my hair for years, and I am so happy he opened this stylish, intimate salon, which is hidden away in NYC's best neighborhood. The laidback vibes are unmatched by any other salon. Plus, MJ always has great music playing. I recently decided to chop off my long hair, and MJ was the only person on the planet I'd trust to do the job! MJ never rushes during the appointment and is super friendly and crazily talented. I always leave with a smile on my face. I can't wait for my next cut. THANKS MJ!!

10/10!!!!!! I came in needing help fixing a cut another salon butchered- MJ cut my hair the best it ever has been. I’ve never felt more confident! He has an amazing technique and I will most definitely be back. Still in awe of how obsessed I am with this cut!

Finding a hairstylist in New York can be quite intimidating. But Shapes delivers such a calm and welcoming atmosphere. I feel comfortable and confident about the suggestions and advice. Big thanks to MJ. Through out the years I have had ideas for my hair that he’s nailed and theres been times where I wanted something new and needed a suggestion. He’s been amazing in my hair journey

Before MJ I was one of those who rarely got my hair cut... Now I make sure to go every 3 months because I love it. MJ has been cutting my hair for about 7 years now. I have followed him to all the salons and when he opened up his own shop, I naturally followed him! I won't let anyone else cut my hair as MJ knows my hair best and never fails! ALWAYS getting compliments every time :D I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

MJ is a true professional with a a strong idea of the right techniques to get the look you want without comprising your hair as it grows out. Got a haircut in august that still looks picture perfect in November. Can’t wait to go back. Plus, he is a sweet and interesting dude.

Prior to MJ and Shapes, I’ve bounced around NYC stylists for ~15 years and after getting a cut here I’m happy to say that I will never go elsewhere again. MJ has been cutting my hair for probably three years now and there hasn’t been a single instance where it hasn’t come out perfectly. Haircuts go beyond hair when it comes to stylists at this level because they are taking your face and overall style into account. I think that is where MJ truly sets himself apart from the crowd. I can’t recommend Shapes enough. There are of course many talented stylists in NYC but between what I said above along with the friendly vibes that Shapes offers, I really see no reason to go anywhere else.

I got a haircut here yesterday. MJ is super friendly and very good at cutting hair. I have never met someone with such an eye for detail and a passion for getting things absolutely right. Several times, MJ took a step back and looked at my head from different angles to make sure that my haircut was impeccable. And, I have to say, it is impeccable. I'm very pleased with the result and look forward to my next visit!

I’ve been getting my hair cut from MJ for two years, and his new salon is amazing!!!!!!! Shapes is seriously the best space ever. The vibe inside is always great. Lots of light, lots of plants, and MJ always has good music playing. It’s welcoming, warm, and inclusive, in a truly open and unpretentious way — real evidence of MJ’s care for his work and for his clients. MJ is amazing with hair. He works with great precision and attention to detail. I feel like he has developed a real understanding of my hair. I’ve been able to experiment with new cuts, styles, and colors in a really exciting way because I trust him so much. I would recommend him 100%!!!!!!!!! I haven’t gone anywhere else in the past 2 years and I don’t plan to!!!

MJ is the best hairstylist I've ever had, hands down! I've been a client of MJ's for a couple years and over that period of time he's really helped me understand my hair better. Each haircut I've gotten from MJ has not only looked great the day of the cut, but also months later! I've never had haircuts that have grown out so well and even looked better as they've aged!

MJ is the man. A master with scissors (and on the turntables). Takes his time with his cuts, is great following orders or delivering a “dealer’s choice”, bonus points for providing some incredible soundtracks during the experience.
