Radio edit: Paul is an artist, and I leave looking and feeling like “a weapon” every single time. Extended cut: I had always loved getting a haircut. Unfortunately, I had looked for a couple years to find a great barber after moving to Columbus and tried most of the top shops. You name it, it happened: many, many mediocre cuts, some truly bad barbering, a skin infection from a dirtier shop, and flakey, cancel-happy barbers. I was losing hope. Despite their reputation and amazing pictures on social media, I walked into Soft Skull for the first time with low expectations. I am delighted to report that I was wrong. Paul is the epitome of thicc gym bro, and he is also kind, respectful, and warm—a gifted people-person and conversationalist. (I am not, so this helps.) After asking what I wanted from my haircut and listening attentively, he walked me through his plans for my hair and beard and why he had chosen it based on my head shape, hair type, growth directions, color, and more. Then, he took his time and crafted the best haircut I’ve ever had, and walked me through care and styling. Some of my friends and students agreed in unsolicited commentary that it was, indeed, the best haircut they’d ever seen on me. It also grew out beautifully. The shop itself is immaculately clean. It is also one of the only shops where I have never overheard conversation among the barbers/stylists that is misogynistic or homophobic—it’s a wonderful thing when people are confident in what they do and don’t need to constantly put others down to feel good about themselves. Highly recommend. To Paul: thanks for restoring my haircut joy. Long live Soft Skull.

I needed to reinvent my hair style a bit and this place was perfect. First of all the vibes are awesome here. Paul was super cool and walked me through everything so I could feel confident handling the style on my own. Super happy with how it turned out can’t recommend enough.

Being a woman with a men’s haircut, I’ve always found it difficult to find somewhere that’s not afraid to go short or to cut it and not make it look “girly”. I finally decided to go to a barber shop compared to a salon and it was the BEST decision I could have possibly made. Nick did an excellent job; he paid attention to detail every step of the way, and provided a very precise and tailored look (which is exactly what I was looking for). The ambiance of the shop itself was very welcoming and had an overall enjoyable atmosphere. It’s wonderful when you can find staff members that can create a vibe that resonates with you and has such a positive energy! The prices are phenomenal for the treatment that you receive as well! 10/10 do recommend! Thank you guys for a great experience, and thank you Nick for taking care of me today!

Best shop in the Midwest hands down, all of the Barbers/stylists know their stuff and care about their craft. Payne has been my guy for 2 years and the attention to detail, banter, and environment is unmatched. All the other barbers and stylist are the same, you can't go wrong with Jalil, Nick, or the head hauncho Paul. This local business is going to do big things in Columbus.
