A CUT ABOVE: Fantastic team who always go above-and-beyond whether it's coaching our curls or general cutting. Lorraine is a rare breed who manages a rare combo of understated and brilliant! Ed is also a gem. If you find em, you'll follow em as i have from Noo York to Ireland and back as they are tender with every tendril.

I feel uniquely qualified to write this review for SpiralXYZ as I have had curly hair all my life (over 6 decades), and have known Lorraine Massey, the genius and owner of SpiralXYZ for approximately 20+ something years now, and I fully intend to know her for much longer. I first discovered Lorraine Massey on NY1, a local NYC television news program. At the time, I was looking to help my 60+ year old mother solve the problem of losing her curls which had “suddenly” gone flat much to her displeasure. At the time, Lorraine was the co-owner of the Devachan salon which was located on West Broadway in SoHo. However, the interview I was watching on NY1, was about her 1st book, “Curly Girl: The Handbook.” I was instantly enthralled with the idea of having my haircut by Lorraine Massey, but as I listened carefully to her interview, I decided to buy her book from Amazon immediately and read it first, which I did. The book is still available in its second edition on Amazon. I think I grew my hair out for 3-4 months prior to seeing Lorraine in person. I did that as I tend to wear my hair short and had just had it cut. I decided to follow her advice about caring for my curls from her book prior to seeing her. To make a long story shorter, I have been a customer of Lorraine Massey ever since, till COVID hit while I was living in another state. I am now delighted to be back in the fold, although I never really left. Just so you understand, I was not a pushover customer. I was very much mourning the loss of a beloved hair stylist and friend of mine of 15+ years when I first encountered Lorraine. I tried filling his hair stylist shoes by going to the top hair stylist in NYC, especially those known for being curly hair specialists. Between my Mom and me, we had tried 17 other hair stylists. I spent a stupid amount of money doing it too. I worked and I deserved it. Neither of us were happy till we met Lorraine, and there are reasons, multiple reasons. Lorraine Massey lives breathes and thinks about curly hair. It is a passion of hers that consumes her imagination. I do not know about you, but I adore passionate people being one myself. Passionate people give their all to their passions and personally that is one of the many things I admire about Lorraine Massey. She created her hair care products in order to achieve the results she was looking for from hair care products. Like many other curly girls, she found little help from the products on the market aimed at curly girls. I could easily continue this story but want to share that following Lorraine’s advice my Mom’s hair returned to being curly. I was able to give my Mom this gift because of Lorraine, and she never lost her curls again. I cannot recommend Lorraine or her salon, SpiralXYZ highly enough. Most salons leave me feeling weary of the experience of being stressed out by their atmosphere of kinetic insanity that envelopes them. There is no such environment in SpiralXYZ. It is literally like a sanctuary for both you and your curls, an oasis in a desert that will leave you feeling transformed both figuratively and spiritually. Welcome to curly hair heaven.

Best place to get curly hair “done”

Fabulous. If you have waves or curls this is where you should go. No one knows curly/wavy/swavy hair better than Lorraine who is absolutely fabulous. Mention Sarah maybe you’ll get a discount. I love Lorraine and Eddie, the colorist!

The amount of love and care that Lorraine puts in cutting each curl is incredible. I’ve been going to her salon for the past 3 years and every cut has been amazing. Love her and her work!

Sadly I had an absolutely horrible experience. Ed was doing my hair color. I ended up with my roots much lighter tone than the rest of the hair. Round two - color, washing, drying - the roots are still much lighter and grey hair is popping up. Ed was not quick to see the problem. Round three - Ed puts the color in, I can smell ammonia. I am inquiring whether the color is semi/demi permanent as I required, Ed confirms. When I feel my scalp burning and develop headache, Ed admits the color was permanent the third time around. I express regret that he used permanent hair color on me without consulting or notifying. He gets mad and works my hair very roughly. When I point out that he is mad and my hair is not styled, and I don’t want to come out of the salon with messy hair, he suggests me to leave. The owner Lorraine who observed the situation in development chose to support her friend Ed rather than her customer. When I complained that Ed used on me permanent color without my consent, she said that she trusts her friend. When I responded that he might not worth the trust she acted like she was terribly insulted and let me know I am not welcome at the salon. Very strange customer service approach. I had to spend at the salon 3 times regular time, got my hair damaged and was kicked out with messy hair. Would you want to have experience like that? You decided

The masters of curls, innovators and pioneers with such humility. It really was a great experience. Had Lorraine but they all looked amazing.

The experiences I have had at Spiral XYZ have been like no other! Lorraine and staff have created a Zen like space in the middle of bustling Tribeca. My hair feels understood and cared for. Love this place.

Absolutely phenomenal experience. I had the privilege of having Lorraine cut my hair. She is a humble master of her craft who teaches you how to love your hair in its natural state and see the beauty in your individual curls. I felt incredible leaving the salon and couldn’t be happier with my hair. ❤️

I had the weirdest experience ever at the salon. I was super excited to book an appointment for a curl cut with Lorraine, and after discussing about my hair cut for ~15 mins, she abruptly decided to cancel my appointment after she actually held her scissors to cut my hair!!!! All what happened was a discussion about wifi! Her business partner (I think his name is Edward) was super rude to me when I asked for the wifi password, and literally said "it's up to the salon not to you" on whether they share the wifi password with guests. He didn't like it when I was critical of the policy & his attitude. It was the weirdest & rudest experience I had at a hair salon- if not ever!! There is a fine line between authenticity & lack of professionalism, and that encounter reflected an absolute lack of professionalism. I left the salon not only without a haircut but also feeling insulted & hurt...over a wifi password for God's sake!

I was a devachan girl since 2005. While I found it mediocre after my first stylist left-my next stylist did no harm. Desperate for a haircut late last fall and finding out that my stylist had left Deva-I discovered Spiral. I made the choice to go with Eddie instead of Lorraine-and it was a mistake. He seemed to not understand my curly hair-was confused by the different curl patterns and the weird straight section in the back. I asked him not to take the length up above my collarbone-but he just kept cutting and I ended up with a mullet. I did not realize how bad it was until I got home. I suffered with it for a month and getting it fixed by Numbia at Rezo for A LOT of money. To fix it-she had to cut my hair shorter than it's been in 30 years. All in all, I ended up being out about $500. Never again.

i recently had a scheduled appt. which i arrived early to. As a new customer, one has an expectation to be taken on time. I had to inquire about my appt. as i noticed i wasn't being called. I was then informed by the receptionist, that the operator was still involved with a customer, and i would have to wait an additional 30 minutes. Needless to say, i was disturbed since, i made the effort to arrive early and expected the same responsibility to be given to the customer.. After all, this was not a $9.99 hair cut. The owner was in the shop (Lorraine Massey) who did not even have the decency or business etiquette to apologize, since i was a new customer! Folks, please don't waste your time... with the "Hype" of the cut and cost!! You are paying inflated prices, so the monthly rent can get paid, with no respect or regard for the client!!

This is Lorraine Massey's personal salon: she's an internationally famous curl specialist (though she can cut any kind of hair) and the author of Curly Girl and several other books about how to style and care for curly hair (including the upcoming Curly Kids). She was the co-founder of Devachan and the inventor of their early products (and their technique!) and has now struck out on her own. She is absolutely the best--I've been her devoted customer for over twenty years and she is the only one who can successfully cut my thin and fine curly hair. I adore her--she's a true genius!
