Mary has given me the gift of the best hair of my life! She took the time to explain to me the science behind my curly hair texture, diagrams included. As someone that’s been confused by all the info online for curly girls, Mary is an absolute delight. She walked me through all the steps I needed to learn how to style my hair and did it all with a smile! Mary is not only extremely knowledgeable, talented, and creative, she is also an absolute pleasure to be around. I’ve been loving my first cut with Mary and am excited for many more to come!

There’s a good reason that Mary has so many 5 star reviews, and “hairapist” is the most perfect description for her. My first appointment began with a zoom call consultation, followed by a wonderful experience at her beautiful salon. Mary’s knowledge of the science and chemistry of hair combined with her artistic approach, made for a fabulous result. I couldn’t be happier with my cut, color and subtle highlights. I’ve booked my next appointment, and wish I could give Mary more than 5 stars. She’s the BEST!!

Mary is an artist and so amazing! She did such a great job fixing my haircut that I had done a few days before, to capture exactly what I wanted. She was also so sweet to accommodate me on NYE & brought an extra breakfast sandwich! Absolutely lucky to have her and her salon near me!!!

Mary is great! She has a very thorough consultation process which I appreciate, and she is so welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed my experience from start to finish. I will be returning and recommending her to my friends. While setting my hair in rollers she was kind enough to explain to process for me since I expressed struggling with it at home. She is a talented stylist, and I left feeling fabulous and well taken care of. Thank you Mary! 😊

Mary is a PRO. A good friend who had recently had her long, thick, curly hair cut by Mary recommended her. Before I even showed up for my appointment at her fresh, light-filled, airy salon we had exchanged multiple texts, images, and video-chatted. She was completely transparent about her process. When I arrived for my appointment Mary spent more time talking with me about my hair before she began, explaining how my hair works and why. No one has ever cut my hair with such thorough, deliberate choices. Her design released the curl that had always been there, waiting for the proper cut. She took years off my age. My friend who had recommended Mary dropped by to say hi and ended up staying for the duration of my appointment. We had a wonderful time chatting and I have never been happier with how my hair looks. Note: I go to bed with wet hair. I do not own a blow dryer or a curling iron or any implement other than a wide-toothed comb. Mary did not sell me any products. Three days later, my hair continues to look gorgeous. Warm, gracious, and exceedingly knowledgeable, Mary IS the Hairapist. She knew just what to do to bring out my best hair with lasting results. <333!

Mary works miracles… she completely transformed my curly hair. She is extremely deliberate and attentive to your concerns and talks you through everything. RUN! Avoid Mary's Salon at all costs! My hair color & cut ended in a disaster. Not only did the appointment take HOURS longer than discussed, but the stylist, Mary, never mentioned the outrageous final cost of until I was ready to pay: $800! Worst part? The final cut and color looked NOTHING like what I wanted. Took 2 more appointments at a different salon to fix this expensive mess! Save yourself the stress and disappointment. Find a salon that respects your time, budget, and most importantly, your hair goals.

Very odd and difficult communication. This place was recommended but I had trouble finding the website so I called. No one answered but Mary texted me back “what can I do for you” so I responded with my name and my wish to have a haircut. She then FaceTimes me but I am on muni and don’t video typically. I ask about a website and she says they aren’t necessary…ok. Then she basically tells me that if I don’t want to FaceTime I can’t get an appointment. Strange place but ok.

I got my hair cut here by Mary a few weeks ago and it was a very positive experience and a great haircut! Mary is very attentive to what you want, collaborates with you to help you achieve your vision, and is an excellent communicator. The haircut turned out great and she explained to me every step of the process. Also, the space itself is comfortable, beautiful, and tranquil - you can tell Mary put alot of thought and passion into it, as she does with all her work. Thank you Mary!

I’m writing this review a few weeks out from my haircut now and still cannot believe how amazing it looks - by far the best my hair has looked my whole life! I get complimented on it constantly and the cut was so well done that it requires zero styling to look great and is growing out beautifully (even though it involved full bangs). The experience was amazing too - Mary collaborated so much with me before the appointment, requesting a FaceTime meeting to get a look at my hair and having me send her a few inspiration photos, then discussing which of those photos would work best with my hair, features, and desired level of maintenance. She showed me tricks for styling it and recommended an incredible product that has been magic for my hair. Her studio was beautiful and I had so much fun talking to her! I can’t recommend her enough!

Mary has most definitely earned her title as The Hairapist! If you’re a cozy blanket and a glass of wine kind of gal, then The Hairapist studio is the place to be. While I unraveled and unwound, Mary found a way to bring long-lost curls back to my hair. Best haircut in a long time!

Mary takes the time to consult with you, listen to your ideas and then really delivers when it comes to color and style. The salon is in a cute neighborhood with easy parking. The salon itself is such a beautiful and comfortable place. I came to her for a color correction and left with gorgeous platinum hair and a plan to maintain it.

An incredibly beautiful oasis in the outer Richmond with an equally incredible artist at the helm. Mary is so talented and kind. She brought out a level of curl in my hair I never knew I had. It was reasonably priced and really just so happy with the results. Already looking forward to my next cut.

Hey 😁 I need to share with you how cute this place is. When I got there I was presented with a variety of drink options, of which I chose coffee, and she made it exactly how I like it! Then she told me to go put on my robe, and I was a bit confused. I had never done this at any of the hair salons I’ve been to. But then I get behind the partition and I see a robe with my name on, so I went into the bathroom. The bathroom was adorable! It was dimly lit with candles and had the cutest owl basket to put your used hand towels in. Then we started with the haircut, we had a good chat, drank some yummy coffee, enjoyed the presence of the birds, and boom! We were done 🤗. I sincerely can not put into words how much I love the haircut and the overall experience! Typically when I go to salons, the stylist always makes remarks about how my hair is impossible to tame, that my hair is too thick, etc. Mary didn’t complain once. She made sure I felt safe and comfortable through the entire experience. My hair now feels and looks so healthy! If you’re looking for a new hair place I definitely recommend the Hairapist ☺️. Mary is a kind and loving soul who is ready to make all your hair dreams come true ✨.

I came to Mary for the first time last week and am so happy that I trusted her with my hair. I arrived with an uneven, choppy haircut and awkwardly dyed hair, and left with stunning blond highlights and a super cute cut! In the days leading to my appointment, Mary was communicative and made sure that she understood what I wanted, and that I understood what the process would be. Her studio is also very cute and she is a pleasure to talk to. I highly recommend the hairapist!

Mary is an artist. I went from scraggy COVID hair to the best haircut of my life. She was also welcoming to a guy who is not familiar with salon's. Highly recommend her amazing place. If you want to look your best and have a relaxing escape, this is where you go.

Mary is incredible at her craft! She is also attentive, knowledgeable, welcoming, and responds to calls/texts quickly. I first got in touch with Mary because my hairstylist at the time had cut my hair in a way that I didn’t like. I reached out to Mary and was able to go see her that same day, which I truly appreciated. I loved that she took the time to inquire and understand what was bothering me about my recent haircut. She also had on-point recommendations. As she was cutting my hair, I could tell immediately that the end result would be great. And I was right—my new hair gave me so much relief and joy, and I received nonstop compliments afterwards. My most recent haircut from Mary made me feel confident, light, and cute ☺️ She has a knack for bringing out your personality through her haircuts, which makes her absolute gem!

This is the hair should be done!!! Mary is a true artist, she assesses your face, hair type, lifestyle and personality and the outcome is fabulous! She went over and beyond to show me how to style my long wavy hair without damaging it while making sure I understood so I could reproduce the look at home. I have been searching for a stylist like this and am so happy to have found her!!! Additional Bonus: she will lift your spirits as she is making your hair beautiful.

I feel absolutely fabulous! Mary has so much passion for her craft and goes above and beyond to make the process such a beautiful experience. Her salon is full of art, music and nature. You will get pampered with wine, sparkling water or even a warm cup of coffee in a rainy day. I have a LOT of hair and my transformation took over 5 hours. The time flew by. She takes the time to listen to your ideas and puts her expertise to work. She goes above and beyond to make a real work of art. I absolutely love my new look! You will get a personalized robe and she will take the time to really understand what you are looking for. Parking can be a little tricky on Balboa during the busy hours of the day, but it’s pretty easy to find parking on the side streets. If you are looking for someone that takes your hair experience to the next level, The Hairapist is the best spot in town.

Mary helped me think through what I wanted beforehand by calling and texting. She was so sweet and helpful! She helped me find a style that I was excited about, then made it happen. I have thin hair, and she was totally right that a body wave perm helped me get natural looking waves that add volume. Mary also showed me how to blow out my hair flat whenever I want. You can see the blown out style and the wavy hair in the pictures (not heavily styled, so a little messy and not as wavy as they can get with a little effort).

Mary is AMAZING. I came to her with a mess - I had tried to buzz my own hair and panicked when I went really short so asked for an urgent haircut so she could fix the mess I'd created... And she more than fixed it. I have one of my favorite haircuts I've ever had, she was SO nice and nonjudgmental, and I felt very safe with covid as it was just the two of us in a small salon and we wore masks the whole time. Definitely would recommend!

Let me start by saying Marry is an all around professional and on top of that she has the best personality. I am a guy that usually keeps my hair short so I don’t really think twice about when I get a cut and with that I also didn’t realize how much I was missing out on and how much I needed to be pampered (shampoo massage) It’s always a great ambiance in her salon and always clean. My barbershop closed at the beginning of the pandemic and has not re-opened since. I entrusted the Hairapist to tame my out of control Covid hair and was very satisfied. Mary gives a great cut and shared some excellent tips on how to keep my style on point between visits. Clean, professional space, full service Salon. Highly recommended.
