paid several hundred dollars to have my hair lightened but i ended up leaving with significantly darker hair than when i came in. awful customer service follow-up, pretty much ignored me when I asked them to correct the issue.

I see Ellie at the Capitol Hill location and she is great! I love every haircut I have gotten from her and she also just did some hair tinsel for me. They are really communicative around appointment confirmations and changes. I think their pricing is a really good value, which is really refreshing. I also really appreciate that the vibe is positive and the people there really seem to like each other. I also really appreciate that the music is never too loud. Call me old.

Lauraina did such a good job on my color correction that I went home and cried. Having her do my color is a stress free wonderful experience every time. Very fine, detailed workmanship. My witch streaks have never looked better. Extreme attention to detail, extremely talented. You won't find a colorist like this more than once in your lifetime.

Okay experience. Salón itself is perfectly fine, did not enjoy my stylist experience. This salon is probably suitable for neurotypical extroverts who do not wish to think about their hair, potentially good for trendy cuts. - Stylist did not review the notes I wrote while booking online, missing important information - Stylist was dismissive and cut me off multiple times when I tried explaining what I wanted - Stylist was pushy with hairstyles not relevant to me - Stylist did a boilerplate cut instead of what I was asking for - Stylist made me uncomfortable at several points, like when I tried giving her a head's up about unusual spots in my hair and she said "I've been a stylist for 10 years, I can do a bob" Ultimately, I left with a haircut that was not what I came for. That's not to say it's a bad cut or even that the stylist is bad, just that we are incompatible and the cut is not what I paid for. The salon has other stylists available, all of whom came off as very friendly (even the receptionist was a sweetie pie!). The atmosphere of the salon is bright, gregarious, with comfortable chairs at the sinks. They have products for sale geared towards curly hair, as well as some hair accessories and trinkets.

I saw Liza at VAIN for a blowout in August and she is FANTASTIC! Just the way I remember. Full disclosure. I DID work there at one point. But I live in NYC now and haven't been to VAIN in 17 yrs. Just as great of vibes and everyone there was super cool and friendly. Everyone else looked happy and their hair was cool.

One of 5he best salons in this town. Friendly team, talented stylists, and awesome products. They have curly hair specialists, perm specialists, and creative color and cut specialists. It's a laid back punk establishment. So Just chill and experience it.

Unethical, racist business overcharging customers and underpaying the contractors for washing their large loads of towels and capes stained with hair products and other chemicals. Please use a professional laundromat for wash dry fold and pay fair price for all laundry workers. Please treat contractors with respect and dignity even if they’re not customers. They also lied about their business hours and accused the contractors for being late to drop off their laundry. One contractor (An Asian lady) left her dolly in the store after dropping off their laundry. She returned and found her dolly being placed next to a share bike and trash can outside the store. Updated 10/6/23: The Karen who disguised herself as “Mei” was being resentful here, that was the same review she gave to VAIN Salon in West Seattle last year.

Amazinggg:) Had a cut with Maritza. Had a loose idea of the vibe I wanted but no real vision for the cut; came in for a consult and she had some lovely ideas and a super clear vision that aligned perfectly with what I wanted. Came back shortly after and she did a lovely job on the cut. It was definitely a departure for my usual style but I'm very happy with it. Also helped me immensely with how to keep my hair healthy, as that's something I struggle with, and had some great product recommendations. This was my first professional haircut in years (doing it myself for a long time) and I'm so glad I went to Maritza!! Very friendly and sunny soul too ^_^ They do updates on bangs or whatever for $25 as well, which I know a good chunk of salons do but it's a good deal and nice to have a clearly stated policy on it. :)

I LOVE this place. I have been coming here for haircuts by Maritza for over a year now, and she is always, always amazing. On my first visit I was obviously pretty stressed out (haircuts used to make me anxious, but not anymore!), and she was so patient and considerate and such a good listener - she asked questions to clarify what I wanted, and checked in with me throughout the appointment, and it turned out amazing! I got a short, layered, pixie cut, with some fun details, which I think I could happily wear for the rest of my life. I mentioned that I like to keep my hair pretty low maintenance, and Maritza cut in in a style that doesn't need any styling or product to look just right. It not only looks super sharp and flattering when it's freshly cut, but it grows out beautifully, so I can go four or five months between appointments, and enjoy a shaggier look while still feeling confident that it looks good. And when it's time to get it cut I just show up at Vain, knowing that I'll get to spend an hour chatting with Maritza, and leave with a haircut that not only makes me look good, but makes me feel like the best version of myself. (Also, everyone else I've interacted with in the salon has always been lovely - and they are good about sending timely appointment reminders, which, as a forgetful person, I appreciate!)

I came in for a pretty tough color correction(going semi at home color brown to blonde).My beautiful stylist was Amirah. I chose this wonderful salon because I noticed they do insane colors and I knew they these wonderful stylists were pros and bleaching was their thing. She was able to get my hair to a level 7/8 and without insane damage. I already had significant damage but she was able to pick through old highlights to save my hair. The tone is perfect for my skin tone. Hopefully a few more sessions and I’ll be where I want to be. Definitely coming back, you have a very happy customer for as long as Im I’m Seattle!

I was looking for a simple bang trim. Upon calling I was informed that they only offer this “exclusive” service to existing clients. I guess something as minuscule and low cost as a bang trim wasn’t worth their time. The call was brief but it informed me enough to show this salons true colors. They only care about money and they aren’t nice or welcoming to new comers. Hard pass for me.

Maritza is an excellent stylist!. I went to VAIN for the first time and I received excellent service. This was my first haircut in nearly a year due to COVID and I'll admit I was less than clear about what I wanted. Maritza was an excellent listener, made sense of what I really wanted (short, wash and wear, but modern) and gave me a great cut. I also want to highlight her candor and honesty. I voiced interest in a radical change to my hair, and while she was supportive, she clearly delineated all that would be required. She helped me realize that it would not be a great fit for me, and I appreciate that she took who I am into her advice, and did not try and guide me into more expensive services. I will definitely be returning! 10 out of 5 stars!

My sister came home early this year with her best haircut in our shared lifetimes, re-living a discussion about batman that she'd had with her stylist, Maritza, and how on top of everything else she had la virgen at her station which made her feel like she was somewhere cozy back home. I can now confidently second her opinion that Maritza is amazing, as a skilled professional and a person. She wasn't just about cutting my hair for that one day - she made a plan so that my cut would work for me and my life, and the time scale we talked about. (At first I spoke rashly about just chopping everything off, and am grateful today that she was honest (and right!) in suggesting an alternative approach.) What more can you ask? But, when I told her during the appointment about a high-stakes grad school meeting I had coming up, she insisted on scheduling a quick styling right before, even though it would be her day off(!!). Maritza made me look amazing and buoyed my spirits with her kindness, generosity and humor- and the meeting went about as well as it possibly could have! Thanks a billion!

They charged me a prepayment when I made an appointment of $100. When checking out the receptionist conveniently forgot about it. When I reminded her about the deposit she asked me if I wanted the money back... (???) Last time I checked the place is NOT a charity. It was funny to see the receptionist's unapologetic demeanor. Anyway. Not going there anymore. Just a reminder: make sure you keep track of all their charges.

After a few years of cutting my own hair, I decided to finally try a new place for a professional cut. My hair is a weird mix of wavy/curly, which always makes me hesitant to try new places. I chose Vain based on the reviews. It was a nice place but ultimately a disappointing experience that has left me regretting it months later. I don’t really feel like my vision was listened to or understood, and my stylist left me with blunt ends reminiscent of my middle school poodle hair days. Most of my hour-long appointment was spent under a large, strange hair drying contraption— no other drying option was given, unlike other places I’ve been to where they ask me how I want it styled. My actual cut was maybe only 15 minutes. I also tried to be clear I really didn’t want to lose too much length, but my stylist cut off the length she thought I needed— not the length I asked for. I’m disappointed because I have my wedding coming up and will seriously miss my long locks for pictures, but I can’t undo that now. This place charges upscale prices for a very impersonal, mediocre experience that has me wishing I had just cut my own hair. I was just visiting town, so maybe this kind of experience is typical of a hip Seattle hair cut. I was really excited to try this place and had high hopes, but I don’t think I’d give it a second chance even if I could. Based on the other reviews though, it seems like you’ll get a good cut, maybe you just need easier hair to work with or give them total style control.

I asked for a trim and some light layers, she basically gave me bangs (which are choppy and way too thick). I can’t pull my hair back into a ponytail anymore which is also a huge bummer. I thought hairdressers normally asked if they were going to chop your hair that much... I guess not! I think you just need to be VERY clear about what you want. I’m very disappointed in how the layers near my face are, it’s the same terrible bang situation I had in 7th grade! It’s a clean and comfortable space, however. Just be more clear than I was about what you want! EDIT: I have had multiple people come up and tell me my hair is uneven and it looks awkward… I’m really not satisfied with this haircut. Definitely won’t be going back.

I’ve had my hair done at a number of salons that I’ve been unsatisfied with- whether it be the customer service, hair color, or even the cut itself. But Maritza really checked all the boxes to make me feel welcome, informed, and beautiful. I came to her with such a mess on my head that I didn’t know what to do with and she absolutely saved it! I’ve never gotten so many compliments on my hair before! Thank you so so much for helping me feel stylish and confident.
